Mizzou vs. Washburn vs. Ole Miss

Total COA: Mizzou 90k, Ole Miss 87k, Washburn 60k (All of these assume 20k/y CoL, which may be lower, and also assumes no other scholarships than what was originally offered)

Will be using Stafford and GradPlus Loans, plus about a semester of GI Bill.

I'm from SE MO, and have strong ties to the area, but also have ties to KC and Memphis.

My career goals are smaller practices or small/medium city work, not entirely sure what area of law yet.

Numbers: 158/3.25

Taken LSAT once.

I think people will tell you to retake.

You should retake that LSAT. With a 170+ you are looking at T14s. With a 165+ you are looking at full rides to most T2s and some T1s. Even +2 points on the LSAT you would be sitting MUCH better.

As for schools, I wouldn't pick any on the list. They are too expensive when compared with their job numbers. Retake for T14>WUSTL (for the area) with $$$ >Full ride at flag ship)

I don't buy into the whole T14 thing, as I'm not interested in BigLaw. And, for the most part, rankings have little to do with quality of education. It's a shame that a private dump of a magazine's rankings has this much control over law school admissions.

I should probably re-take (that's very funny), but I'm 35, and don't really want to wait another year.

You are going to have a hard time with the T14 because your GPA is kind of crappy. And since you are not interested in big law or prestigious PI there would not be much benefit for you. I think strong regional with good scholarship is the right answer for you. I was recommending you r e t a k e because it will give you better scholarships at the regional schools you are interested in.
I don't know much about the schools you posted, have you checked them out on LST?

Here's the thing: quality of education has very little to do with your ability to get a job. Most people would agree that any of these schools could teach you the law perfectly well: it's basically the same curriculum as at any of the T14. Rankings are borderline irrelevant, as are "tiers". It's all about whether a school actually puts the majority of it's graduates into legit legal jobs.

There's nothing wrong with attending a regional school in an area you have ties, but you need to do it at the right price. Know that if you find a job out of these schools, it's likely to be small law and will probably start you around 45k a year. Nothing wrong with that, but I wouldn't want to live on 45k a year AND make payments on 90k in loans. R-e-t-a-k-i-n-g isn't just about getting into the T14. It's also about netting scholarship money.

Believe me, as someone who is at best ambivalent about Big Law, I know how annoying the "r-e-t-a-k-e, go to a T14" mantra can be. It's like some insane self justifying loop: you need a T14 to get Big Law, and you need Big Law (even though it sounds absolutely miserable) to pay your T14 loans. You should still r-e-t-a-k-e though. Your COAs are simply too high for those schools.

Its not the rankings that makes them good, its the reputation with firms. If you don't want biglaw that's fine, you should still re-take for scholarship. I know how you feel with age, I am older myself, however you shouldn't rush this decision as it is likely one of the most important in your life. One more year will pale in comparison to your many years practicing. I have a lot of friends that retook the LSAT and not one of them has ever expressed any regrets about it.

Even if you have your heart on the above schools thats fine, just go for free. Although I think WUSTL has a pretty solid rep in MO.
