Tulane or LSU

Decision day is rapidly approaching and I think I've put this off long enough. Undergrad at LSU. In at Tulane with 40k/year and a full ride at LSU. I'm sure I'm not the first in this situation but I could use some help. I'd prefer to go to Tulane since I've got some solid scholarship. But I'm from Baton Rouge so cost of living would be minimal at LSU. Not sure where I want to be after graduation but NOLA is great, I'd be open to out of state and dread the idea of being stuck practicing at a medium law firm in Baton Rouge for the rest of my life.

Any help is great.

Surely someone can write a script for your account to post this in every thread.

Or someone else can carry the torch for you.

Will you do the honors from now on? I think TLS should have some alert pop up that won't allow you to make a thread until you read it.

Sorry guys I'm new..

Considering Tulane and LSU

Scholarships
Tulane - 40k/year
LSU - ~19k/year (full tuition

COA
Tulane - ~$15000/year
LSU - ~ $5000/year

Will be funded through a combination of savings, loans, and what little I can squeeze out of family. Probably would end up having to borrow about 30k when it's all said and done if I went to Tulane.

Attended LSU for undergrad. Graduated in December with a 3.5 and 166 on the LSAT. Ideally would like to land in NOLA after graduation but would be open to leaving for a few years. Raised on maritime, energy, and oil and gas law being from Louisiana but not sure what I would like to end up doing. Sports law intrigues me but I'm certain you have to sell a family member to be able to get a job in it.

Based on your goals, I think Tulane is a better choice. I would negotiate though. If you decide to choose Tulane, you have to be cool with doing small law in NOLA. If 30k total is really accurate, Tulane is a solid choice for that price.

Is that just because of the lack of big law in the New Orleans market?

you gotta be cool doing small law out of any regional school, really. Since odds of mid/big law are so slim, for the sake of prudency, you should assume you will not get them.

Everybody's from somewhere, man. I'd probably hate living wherever you're from too..

Tulane. It dominates the state and can get you Texas.

LSU is ok, but not as good as Tulane.

OP, I feel you. If you're cool with small law in NOLA, and cool with NOLA itself, I'd go to law school, do well, practice in NOLA, corner some area of practice in 5 years, then enjoy a Ramos Gin Fizz every day.

I wouldn't put it past you, however, my perspective is perhaps different because my disdain for Louisiana mainly stems from racial intolerance, and oh Saints fans

Since you express an interest in Maritime Law, and Tulane is well known in this field, Tulane would seem to be the better choice. Tulane also has an extremely active energy focus in the business school that might be useful to law students as well. Finally, and I am sure you knew all this already, Tulane's director of its sports law program, Gabe Feldman, is pretty well known. So by attending Tulane and using your first year to explore these areas and talk to people, you would have a lot of flexibility.

I would also point out that the new president of Tulane, Mike Fitts, was Dean of UPenn Law for many years (14?) and had a great track record. He is a big believer in interdisciplinary programs, such as business/law for a sector such as energy. That could be interesting. Hard to say how involved he will get in the law school since he has a university to run, or how fast these changes would occur even if he does get involved. But at least you know you would have a sympathetic ear at the highest level should you choose to pursue something like this.
