UT, ride waitlist, or retake? Did I have a bad cycle?
So the last t-14 waitlist came in today. I'm a little upset.
I have a 3.9x, a 167 (second try, first time 163), no special softs, and meh PS and Why X letters.
I'm paying for law school by myself, and I want big law. I really have no significant ties and I'm the east coast.
I'm waitlisted to every school from NYU on, and I'm trying to decide if I should try to get in at sticker. I'm not really looking forward to soul crushing debt and I think a retake can help me with my GPA. But without a job after graduation, I feel a little pressure.
I got into UT with a great scholarship, haven't negotiated (really have nothing to negotiate with) and COA would be a little over 100k. Scary, especially without Texas ties. How do I gracefully tell Texas that I'm not interested, but still want to re-apply for more $ next cycle?
My third option is finding a job (lol wait I'm a humanities major) and retaking and re-applying. I'm leaning towards this option right now.
Looking at Law School Numbers, I feel like I did something wrong. I applied right after Dec LSAT score so it was a little late, but even accounting for that, I still think I underperformed. Did I have a bad cycle? Should I re-apply even if I get a lower LSAT score?

You didn't get into Cornell?
Yeah, something went wrong with your cycle I think.

bro if you were waitlisted everywhere with a 3.9 and 167 something for sure went wrong. Either that "meh" PS was really awful or your rec letters didn't come from people who really wanted to see you succeed.

You should have been in at GULC and Cornell at least. Something ain't right.
I don't think you should tell Texas you aren't interested in those terms. Say you've decided to take a year to work and build your resume, but you plan to reapply next cycle.

No C&F issues. I think retaking in October is my best bet.

Also see if you can get a new LOR writer (or two). I think someone secretly hates you.NotASpecialSnowflake wrote:No C&F issues. I think retaking in October is my best bet.

I'd go for the June retake if possible. If your score improves you could end up with a great option this year and not have to worry about finding a job. Send LOCI's everywhere.

You should retake in June no matter how your cycle shakes out

I don't think it is my LORs, I think it is my personal statement, my why Xs and the general lack of work experience/extracurricular activities. My softs suck. I also went to a small private school that isn't well known.

I would retake/wait a cycle. Chances of going to TX and getting back East are not great.

Maybe you should post it in the personal statements forum. Lack of softs and school prestige shouldn't keep someone with your numbers out of the T14. Thanks for all of the advice. I think I'm going to retake in October, and rewrite my personal statement and why x letters.
