At equal cost, does either have an advantage over the other? I know Northwestern places more in Big Law in general.

Not sure about Big Law placement, but as a native Michigander (Michigianian?) you can live MUCH more cheaply in Ann Arbor than you can in Chicago.

Michigtonian?
Michigander sounds like a water fowl.

NYC is Michigan's #1 market and I'm sure Michigan places a greater % of their class there than NU does. Considering the CoL difference , I'd take UM for sure.
If you are median and above you can easily score NYC, just depends on your interviewing.

2012 placement into NYC:
Michigan: 70/388--18%
Northwestern: 44/295--15%
For 2011 Michigan led 17.5% to 16%. These differences are small enough as to be meaningless.

Part of this is just splitting hairs (and I get that), but if you dig deeper on both of their NALP reports you'll see that Michigan's 25th percentile in the NYC region was getting $160K while Northwestern's was receiving $140K. Minimal differences I know, but if we're purely talking about BigLaw in NYC and you combine that with a larger % and larger raw numbers going there and I would have to give an ever so slight edge to Michigan if we're holding everything else equal. That said, it's hardly like either is a bad choice.

They are more or less peers for NYC. UM is $40k cheaper so unless you have a $50k+ scholarship from NU and are paying sticker at UM, I'd take UM.
