Yeah I agree with you about Georgetown. I may have even put it higher. I hear people all the time say things like, "Oh, he went to Georgetown for law school? He must be a GENIUS."MistakenGenius wrote:I've been around for a few months and I've never seen one before. How is that pro-Georgetown trolling? Georgetown has a ridiculous national reputation with most people, it was tough for it not to be higher. Georgetown's employment numbers and stingy scholarships doesn't matter to them, it still has a huge reputation. If you disagree, then all you have to do is have your own list.mephistopheles wrote:wow, nice original op.
i definitely haven't seen lay prestige hashed out before.
also, egregious pro-georgetttown trolling
This is kind of like saying "I'm not racist, but..."MistakenGenius wrote:This is not a flame.

You're probably not gonna get many positive responses with the conversation laid out as you have it. Rather than trying to start a general conversation, come up with a concrete question. E.g. what schools have more prestige in the South? Is CLS at sticker worth it if I want to end up in [INSERT STATE/REGION HERE]?MistakenGenius wrote:This is not a flame. I just had this talk with a friend who asked me about different law schools. He was absolutely shocked University of Chicago is such an amazing school because he had never heard of it as a major law school. Also, because we're in the southeast, Stanford is viewed as just a bit ahead of Duke with Columbia being slightly better. Obviously, we care about employment and how the school does with jobs, but it did make me think about the differences in how the legal community views schools vs the general public. So, what do you think the top 14 schools are in lay preftige? Obviously, this will vary by region and social group so I think it could lead to interesting conversation. Here are my guesses.
1.) Harvard
2.) Yale (Harvard and Yale really could switch places in my mind and I wouldn't argue, both make the panties drop. Harvard's just the H bomb.
3.) Columbia
4.) Stanford
5.) Penn
6.) Duke
7.) Berkeley
8.) Georgetown
9.) Cornell
10.) NYU
11.) Vanderbilt
12.) UVA
13.) UCLA
14.) Michigan
Honorable mentions- Northwestern, Texas, Notre Dame, and Emory
Your thoughts?
To this point, I think its generally acknowledged that Berkeley/UVA/Michigan all carry the same national lay prestige and recognition, with UCLA trailing by a decent margin.umichman wrote:I know as my name suggests, i may seem biased. But OP's rankings are possibly the most arbitrary and ignorant rankings I have ever seen.
Yeah...this is how a conversation in a decent NYC bar will actually go:MistakenGenius wrote:Harvard and Yale really could switch places in my mind and I wouldn't argue, both make the panties drop.

In brooklyn they'll just think you're a douchebag.banjo wrote:Yeah...this is how a conversation in a decent NYC bar will actually go:MistakenGenius wrote:Harvard and Yale really could switch places in my mind and I wouldn't argue, both make the panties drop.
Girl: "So what do you do?"
Guy: "Oh, I'm a one-el at Harvard Law School."
Girl: "A one-el?"
Guy: "Yeah, a first-year at Harvard Law."
Girl: "Oh...that's cool...so you're still a student."
Guy: "Yeah, so what about you?"
Girl: "I'm an associate at Goldman Sachs."
OP's in the Southeast though. That means law school, even Cooley, is pretty impressive.banjo wrote:Yeah...this is how a conversation in a decent NYC bar will actually go:MistakenGenius wrote:Harvard and Yale really could switch places in my mind and I wouldn't argue, both make the panties drop.

I accept your apology and your impending amended list that has U.Chi in it's rightful 4th place.MistakenGenius wrote:I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings
