Depends on location. I'm not sure any school has more lay prestige out west than Stanford.

I've been around for a few months and I've never seen one before. How is that pro-Georgetown trolling? Georgetown has a ridiculous national reputation with most people, it was tough for it not to be higher. Georgetown's employment numbers and stingy scholarships doesn't matter to them, it still has a huge reputation. If you disagree, then all you have to do is have your own list.

Yeah I agree with you about Georgetown. I may have even put it higher. I hear people all the time say things like, "Oh, he went to Georgetown for law school? He must be a GENIUS."

You're probably not gonna get many positive responses with the conversation laid out as you have it. Rather than trying to start a general conversation, come up with a concrete question. E.g. what schools have more prestige in the South? Is CLS at sticker worth it if I want to end up in [INSERT STATE/REGION HERE]?

Also, if you have to start a thread with "This is not a flame," that should be a ready indicator that you just shouldn't create the thread.

I'd point out that your philistine friends' lack of familiarity with the University of Chicago says nothing about the relative prestige and academic/professional acclaim that institution holds nationwide. Their ignorance speaks more to failures of their knowledge/character than any perceived failure to gain recognition on the part of UChicago.

In fact, the city of Chicago seems to be a generic blindspot here. Northwestern University is far more well regarded in elite social circles, in the business community, in lay conversation, and in academia than UCLA, NYU, UT, ND, Emory, or even Michigan.

Most people think Penn is Penn State. No way it has more lay prestige than Duke, Berkeley, Cornell, or Georgetown

To this point, I think its generally acknowledged that Berkeley/UVA/Michigan all carry the same national lay prestige and recognition, with UCLA trailing by a decent margin.
