I know someone at a top 10 philosophy PhD program, and he said about half the people from his program get tenure-track positions. One his backup plans is to take a year to teach himself how to code and become a software engineer, which is supposedly possible for philosophy PhDs. The other backup plan is law school, of course.Otunga wrote:The job market for professors is arguably much, much worse, particularly for humanities degrees. I almost attended graduate school in philosophy, and while I didn't get into a PhD program, even if I did and it was one at a top 10 program (ranking is essentially arbitrary though, as philosophy grad admissions and job hiring are both very idiosyncratic), my chances at a desirable tenure-track professor job were still probably about 25%. It appears most people end up in post-docs and work as adjuncts.iamgeorgebush wrote:+1 on both counts. Especially number 2...the job market for PhDs is as bad as job market for lawyers.A. 2) do not get a PhD and try to get a job teaching college sociology.
That said, PhDs are generally free and it's the opportunity cost you have to take into account. That, and it becomes damn near impossible to appeal to non-academic employers since you've invested yourself into such an esoteric discipline.

Right. Yeah then, even so, the best case scenario is a 50/50 shot at being a professor. That's like making Yale Law School.
And that plan sounds about right. If you're in a PhD program, it's essentially a given that you have a HYS-eligible GPA.

Well, probably eligible for H considering their willingness to take splitters, but I don't know that it's a given that such a person would have a YS-eligible GPA. I get the impression that as competitive as it is to get into top PhD programs, admissions is less predictable and is not so numbers-driven, because a large part of it comes from LORs and writing samples. You could probably have a 3.7 and still get into a PhD top program as long as your major GPA was 3.9+ and your LORs & writing sample were stellar. These programs are ranked based on faculty surveys, after all, not on some sort of USNWR numbers formula, so they have more leeway to look at applicants truly holistically.Otunga wrote:If you're in a PhD program, it's essentially a given that you have a HYS-eligible GPA.

soo is there a similar forum for mba programs? I'm ditching you guys and going for another arguably worthless degree but I need to seek their validation too before I do.

I'm glad you decided not to go. If all the 0Ls who want law because they can't think of another career stopped applying and attending, the crises might be solved.
I still think most people go to law school because they see no other career path.

Why pursue a degree? I assume you're young, right? Just get a job. It doesn't have to be a permanent job, it's just something to do while you figure things out. There's no rush. And while you're working, maybe you'll figure out what kind of job interests you best and then you can go back to school.

This entire thread is about me choosing a job, particularly a different job than the one I already have and one that does not require a J.D. (and before you spout off something sarcastic about this not being the right forum for this question, I have covered my reasoning for posting here in a previous post) For a bunch of people who claim to comprise the classes or future classes of the T14 the posters in this thread seem to be struggling to either read, comprehend, or analyze what I have posted. I have given a lot of information about myself, my background, what I am seeking and why I am seeking it.
I know that no one here is a job counselor, and that nearly everyone here wants to go to law school.
This forum LOVES (read: completely get your rocks off on) telling people who aren't going to a t14 law school not to go because it is financial suicide and will lead to a life of misery. I mostly agree with this sentiment, but I'm asking you based on your own skill set and the high probability that you don't actually fall into the category of people who are either attending or going to attend HYS what else have you considered? What else would you consider? When you rail people for wanting to go to a tt and tell them to do something else, what might you suggest to them? Especially when they have spent the last 3 years of college and a year after college preparing and working towards law school and nothing else. Said person then fell short of t14 and realized that its not worth the cost to attend and is now seeking a different path. What might be a good option?

$35/hr for training at the academy.
55-60k starting salary.
Work for 10 years, retire, collect pension for the rest of your life.
Then go to law school in your early 30s, hopefully, in a better economy.
Win-win.

go be a maritime enforcement/intel/ops guy with the coast guard. use dat criminal justice degree and still not be a cop! Pay's going to suck for a couple years (37-45k), but three years of that, and you get the full GI bill. Get your LSAT up, ED to a T14 and go for free.
I said something similar to that before, though, and you ignored it/insisted that no one was responding to you.

Here are some other suggestions:
1. Crane operator or some other such trade. I hear job prospects are really good right now, and the training they require is not too extensive.
2. Software engineer/developer. This will require that you teach yourself how to code, but there's a big demand for coders.
3. Actuary. See http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/25/news/ec ... b-actuary/
4. Market research analyst. I don't really know what the career path for this is, but it seems like it could be a good fit for you.

Also, why don't you just get a paralegal certificate and become a paralegal at a big firm?

Is it? I've seen a number of paralegal job postings with "paralegal certificate preferred" in the qualifications.ImNoScar wrote:Because a paralegal certificate is completely useless?iamgeorgebush wrote:Also, why don't you just get a paralegal certificate and become a paralegal at a big firm?

Comrade,
Bit late to the party but thought I'd throw my two cents in. Consulting, Military (OCS/OTS if you want a commission), Teaching ESL abroad (if you just want an excuse to travel), DLA internships (after about 3-4 years you make GS 11), and the NSA/CIA/FBI/DLA are options.
Typically as long as you have your 4 year degree, lots of jobs are open to you... you just gotta sell yourself.
Best of luck.

Teach English in South Korea for a year or two. It's good money and you get to travel, if that's your thing. Maybe you'll like it a lot and go back to school for a Masters in TESOL. Just be careful that it's a reputable recruiter - there are some scammers out there. Check with Park Agency - I'm 99.999% sure they're legit (I met them through my university)
