170/3.23, retaking LSAT wouldn't accomplish much. 20k/year scholarship + 3k/year grant at UT, full scholarship at WUSTL. Personal funds and family contributions will amount to ~10k/year at both.

COA after family/personal contributions:

UT ~51k
WUSTL ~18k

I have ties to Texas and Oklahoma. Would probably want to be in Texas but am flexible on that.

Also have SO considerations but am ignori g them for the sake of this post.

You'll have no problem getting back to Texas from WUSTL as MANY others have done (according to romo), but good luck getting outside of Texas with UT.

UT for 51k isn't bad. Given your ties and mild desire to work in Texas after graduation, I would say UT is the choice.

UT also has about a 10% edge on WUSTL when it comes to BigLaw+Clerkships, while although not much, is tangible.

However, I heard your SO smells so I can understand wanting to leave Texas.

I would have to imagine that most of the statistics pointing to WUSTL as geographically flexible are students heading back to their home markets.

How deep to Texas firms go into WUSTL's class? If you're not in the top 30% at WUSTL you may find it difficult to get back to Texas.

Graduates that go back to their home markets become alumni. Obviously not having ties can make it harder, but you only have to gain by having a geographically diverse alumni base. Also, it's not clear which WUSTL students are the ones going back to Texas. Is it just the ones with ties? Or is it just kids in the top 30%? Or some mixture of both? What is clear both from LST and from ppl on these boards is that getting back to Texas with ties and a WUSTL J.D. is very doable.

Also not being the top 30% at any T20 means you're looking at an uphill job search.

OP I had to make a similar call and all I can share is this: When I was linked to current WUSTL students, 3Ls looking for jobs outside of the main region (St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City) struggled. They especially felt the taxing load of having to travel for interviews while maintainong their coursework. However, I was specifically inquiring about the west coast. My impression is you are not 100% sure where you want to practice, which is how I feel too and therefore portability was essential for me and I just did not have the confidence that WUSTL could do that for me. Just my opinion, and it is all based on anecdotal hearsay so take it or leave it.

The bolded happens all the time for all schools, even in the upper T14's once they miss the OCI boat. If you're a 3L looking for work at any school you're gonna have to balance schoolwork and travel/networking. I'm not saying WUSTL is the promised land of diverse placement, but if you don't get an offer through direct recruitment then you're gonna have to rely on your CSO and your own networking to get a job. Again, nothing is guaranteed at either school at that stage. But who are you going to call if you miss out on Texas as a UT student? As a WUSTL student you or CSO could call alumni in multiple markets and at least try to open some doors for you.

Also, if you find yourself without an offer as a 3L, then debt minimization takes priority, which wil be easier if you take the WUSTL offer. Basically WUSTL is the better option in the only likely scenario in which the bolded would actually be a real concern for you.

I agree with you Cuse, but if OP wants Texas and the bolded happens, networking in-state with prominent in-state UT alum is going to be worlds easier.
