So basically we should all be shooting for academia at NYU instead of this biglaw nonsense.

No wonder we are able to lure over so many of the best professors. Those are some nice job perks.

Also, I don't know enough about this to be outraged at monetary figures without.some perspective.

According to NYU’s 2010 federal tax filing with the IRS (the most recent one made public), Revesz owed the University at that time a total of $5,683,652. It is not known what the amount in excess of the mortgage debt represents.
Perspective really isn't necessary to know shenanigans are about when you see numbers like these.

By perspective im guessing sinf means, is this unusual? Its sketchy and wrong, but probably pretty widespread. Sexton has an aggressive expansive program, but so have many ambitious university prez. So "in perspective" im not sure this makes nyu worse than its peers who perform similar practices

Yep, exactly. Top universities are ridiculously rich...does it just come with the territory or is there something more to NYU?

If they were "ridiculously rich" then they shouldn't be gouging their students to the tune of 50+K per year.

shouldn't, sure. But law schools are a cash cow. that's their purpose for the universities; they help pay for full ride+stipend for PhD's and give ridiculous financial aid grants to lower income (and sometimes even middle class -- Harvard provides staggered aid starting at $180K parents salary) UG students.

I read a report that stated that Princeton could make $6,000,000+ a year if they opened a law school. Similar with Hopkins.

There is something more to NYU. They are pretty unique among the T6 regarding how much they will go to appease faculty. They've poached numerous HYS faculty over the last decade using this strategy.

Lol Im sure if Princeton opened ( or re-opened technically) a law school, the monetary and prestige incentives they could offer would draw an amazing faculty from the rest of the T20 within several years. These profs would have solid clerkship networks.. and princeton UG alumns are everywhere in elite law and education so the network would be influential without a bunch of JDs running around. Their facilities would be godlike (princeton campus is already loaded and gorgeous), and they could start out slow admitting only top students and expand to 200-250 and maintain strong numbers. The prestige of P alone and ivy label would attract students competitive at other T14s. And the school could offer baller scholarships with its huge endowment.

Uci had none of these advantages (except maybe a few star faculty), hence its far less glamorous status.

Hopkins could take bloombergs $250K and make two T14 law schools lol

Ridiculously rich =/= ridiculously altruistic?

IDK, how many of the uber-preftigious profs would have left Chicago, CLS, and Harvard were it not for this kind of thing. I chalk it up to the price of doing business.

BTW this is really old news.

Side note, but if Princeton could become a T15 (as I assume it would newly be crowned) with maybe low eight figures of startup costs, why don't they? Wikipedia says they last deferred it due to construction costs, but there doesn't seem to be a real hypothesized answer other than administrative laziness.

jbagel & sinfiery,

Regarding "perspective," this activity is still principally just as wrong whether NYU is the only one engaging in such activities (VERY unlikely) or these shenanigans are common place. I would think that is agreeable. I also think the question then becomes "is there something more to NYU?" I propose other questions to help answer the former...what specifically is "more?" Furthermore, is a degree of wrongfulness positively correlated with amount of money that is misused?

Do you think Princeton would be satisfied diluting their brand by having the 15th best law school?

Although, Yale doesn't seem to mind having the ~15th best MBA program.

LOL at Baltimore having 3 law schools. The state flagship barely puts 50% in long term full time legal jobs.
