Columbia v.Chicago
Hey all,
I am deciding between chicago and columbia and having trouble deciding. I want to do labor/immigration/human rights law and I dont quite know which way to sway in terms of these schools. What do you all think?

Neither, NYU is the clear choice.

The coa of columbia is about 240k (over three years) and for chicago it is 225k. I have a full ride at chicago and about a half ride at columbia. I am from california and intend on practicing here as well. Like I said above i want to be in human rights/immigration/labor law

Re: Columbia v.Chicago
Between these two obviously Chicago. But if you have a full ride there you must have a near full ride at NYu, again, better for your goals. Also, full ride at Chicago probably means Stanford too, which would be the best school to get back to CA. So SLS > NYU (assuming full ride) > Chicago > CLS. No idea why you've chosen these two schools.switchis32 wrote:The coa of columbia is about 240k (over three years) and for chicago it is 225k. If this is legitimately a difficult decision for you, might as well go to Columbia. We only deal with rational people here in Hyde Park.

How did you get those COA values? If you have a full ride to Chicago and a half ride to Columbia, according to LST you're looking at about $210,000 at Columbia and about $120,000 at Chicago.
To me, Chicago seems to be the obvious choice unless you also have a full ride to NYU.

Sorry, I mean total COA (minus tution*3 or half tuition*3 - not perfect because of interest, but should be about right... and if you account for interest it should be even more in favor of Chicago) - see the top right hand corner on http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=chicago and http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=columbiaTiago Splitter wrote:?LSATSCORES2012 wrote:If you have a full ride to Chicago and a half ride to Columbia, according to LST you're looking at about $210,000 at Columbia and about $120,000 at Chicago.

Full ride at Chicago won't come anywhere near 120K. It's probably more like 70K vs. 170K.LSATSCORES2012 wrote:Sorry, I mean total COA (minus tution*3 or half tuition*3 - not perfect because of interest, but should be about right... and if you account for interest it should be even more in favor of Chicago) - see the top right hand corner on http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=chicago and http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=columbiaTiago Splitter wrote:?LSATSCORES2012 wrote:If you have a full ride to Chicago and a half ride to Columbia, according to LST you're looking at about $210,000 at Columbia and about $120,000 at Chicago.

Talk to LST (The difference probably is that LST assumes loan interest and no scholarships, so the way I did it isn't completely valid, you're right. But the difference between the two schools is still ~100k.)Tiago Splitter wrote:Full ride at Chicago won't come anywhere near 120K. Re: Columbia v.Chicago
Right. LST is assuming full fare plus interest until October after graduation. You have to factor that it before when you consider scholarships, or else you risk saying things like Chicago will cost 120k with a full ride.LSATSCORES2012 wrote: Talk to LST (The difference probably is that LST assumes loan interest and no scholarships.)

Yea. When people struggle with an $80+ delta between essentially equal schools, they clearly have a preconceived preference for one school and are usually looking for justification to choose the weaker option. No idea again why NYU is excluded here.2014 wrote:If this is legitimately a difficult decision for you, might as well go to Columbia. We only deal with rational people here in Hyde Park.

Re: Columbia v.Chicago
seriously, what in the actual....
Did you even apply to NYU, OP? You named a few areas of law and then excluded probably the foremost name for that kind of law on the east coast.
You realize if you go to a PI career fair from Columbia, you will be going to NYU's PI fair? And when you get there, you will be trampled underfoot as the employers rush over to get face time with the RTK kids?

I mean... I'm sort of an NYU homer but this is a ridiculous exaggeration.Tekrul wrote:seriously, what in the actual....

Re: Columbia v.Chicago
With a full tuition scholarship, I don't even know why this is a question...
Pretty sure Chicago will have an immigration law clinic just the same as most schools.
Also, the immigrant population in the east coast is different than in the Midwest. If you are looking at working on cases affecting Mexican immigrants, then the west coast and the west/midwest are going to have a lot more of that. New York is going to have a lot more overseas atlantic immigration and Florida is Cuban immigration.
I think we can all agree that we need to build some kind of a electric razor-wire fence for those GD Canadians, though.
Edited to add: http://www.law.uchicago.edu/clinics
They seem to have everything you'd need for your interests, so... yeah. This really shouldn't be a debate with a full ride.
