T6 vs T10 vs T14

Is there a huge difference among these "tiers"? I searched past threads but obviously T6 gives you a much better shot at clerking, biglaw, biggov, etc, right? But when you get to t10 vs t14, is there much difference? National-reach wise, is there a difference?
Want a discussion on this in general terms, but also selfishly because I'm struggling with $$$$ T14 vs $$ at a T10.

It really depends school by school, depending on your target industry and market. T10 is a meaningless distinction.

T10/T14 is a laughable distinction. After the T6 prospects are almost entirely fungible.

True. I think the t10s I visited during ASW would beg to differ

they ALL talked about it.

They are probably playing off the "people love round numbers" thing. At my T14, they always say they are a top 15 law school. I suppose they think they'd look odd talking about the T14.

T10 is an utterly meaningless distinction. T6 slightly less so, but still pretty meaningless. If you're forced to make tiers it's simply HYS v. T13.

Sounds like they're just taking advantage of the fact that USNWR gave them an extra distinction.
I think the employment data speaks for itself.

Anyone going to Michigan over NU hoping for a T10 bump has made an error in judgment. Penn over GULC? Probably a good call.

Exactly. I will most likely be going to a T14 with money even though I could also go to a T10 with good money and I'm pretty sure I could have gotten money out of a T6 if I wanted to. I just really don't think the bump in the rankings is worth it for my purposes. I can see some argument for T6, but T10 is THE. DUMBEST. DISTINCTION. EVER. I know schools like Mich, Berkeley and UVA probably love to emphasize their Top 10 ranking, yet they often get outplaced by their neigbors to the south Duke, NU and Cornell.

Clearly the only tiers that matter are T3 and T14. T10 is meaningless and T6 is too (only really exists because CCN are slightly harder to gain admission to than the lower-ranked schools). I think CC are at a slightly higher level than the lower schools but NYU is definitely not. Also, these schools don't necessarily provide anything other than a biglaw boost.

There's a much bigger difference between MVPBDNC and Georgetown than between CCN and 7-13.

At least T10 is alliterative. Does anyone here think UT and Vandy are better or equal to Georgetown? I'm inclined to think they have at least some advantages (less competitive markets). Also, I'd rather go to duke than Michigan. So yeah I think T14 and T10 suck. T6 is not so bad - traditionally there has been a huge differene in entering students' lsat scores between nyu and penn. That is something. Hiring wise, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
I'm inclined to say that it is HYS vs other schools in T18. USC and UCLA have always struck me as solid law schools, but things seem to taper off fast after them.

In general conversation with pedestrians saying you attend one of the top 10 law schools in the nation is reasonable. Saying top 14 sounds like you attend #14.

I think T3, T5, and T13 would be a tad more meaningful. Even then, the gap between say Columbia and Penn, or Chicago and Virginia is closed with even a small scholarship from the latters. Once you get to Duke/Michigan/Northwestern/Berkeley, any distinction based on the rankings is utterly meaningless.

Oh, Yale Law uses T18 when discussing how many of its graduates get tenure track positions at elite law schools, so if you have TEH ULTIMATE RESPECT for Yale, then T18 all the way.

Where does this irrational love of the Blue Devils come from? Are you some kind of Tucker Max groupie or something?

It's T7 when Mich is ranked that high. Other years it's all about the T10.

Duke is one of the cheapest options in the T14 and has solid placement stats. I probably wouldn't pay sticker (nor would I for any non HYS school) but I would definitely choose it above Michigan.

Where is Mich rated these days? I thought they dropped out of the top 10. TLS has them at #10, but I think those are the older rankings.

This mentality doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. If you pay full freight at HYS, you're going to be paying it back on a biglaw salary or some form of LRAP/forgiveness. If you pay full freight at a non-HYS T14... uh... ?

FWIW, when I spoke to Duke folks they didn't bat an eye when I said I was considering UVA and Penn, only H got their attention. I don't think they are too caught up on a T10/14 distinction.
