I am trying to convince my friend that specialty rankings are useless. She currently wants to go into $200k of debt at Santa Clara or Chicago-Kent because of their ip rankings. Does anyone have a good source for this?

This is a good starter. Second time that I posted this on TLS today. A lot of the links lead to TTT(T) useless programs and it contains the methodology for how specialty rankings are made.

You got to show her the 2012 job statistics for Santa Clara. 0 people got clerkships and only 40% of its graduates got full-time and long-term jobs

I can tell you from my experience that stanford is acknowledged by many schools and alumns as top in IP. Berkeley is the best at certain IP specialties like privacy--at that level of specificity it depends on the professor. Northwestern sees its program as "among the top 5". Columbia grads seemed to believe their IP program was second only to stanford, while NYU recognized themselves and cls as barely trailing Cal and everyone being a noticeable step behind sls. Clearly all these opinions are prejudiced, but no one ever mentioned santa clara or chicago kent. I dont have time to look into the usnwr methodology on that ranking right now :/

US News & World Report wrote:Specialty rankings: These specialty rankings are based solely on votes by legal educators, who nominated up to 15 schools in each field. Legal educators chosen were a selection of those listed in the Association of American Law Schools' Directory of Law Teachers 2010-2011 (LinkRemoved) as currently teaching in that field. In the case of clinical and legal writing, the nominations were made by directors or members of the clinical and legal writing programs at each law school.
Those programs that received the most top 15 nominations appear and are numerically ranked in descending order based on the number of nominations they received as long as the school/program received seven or more nominations in that specialty area. This means that schools ranked at the bottom of each law specialty ranking have received seven nominations.
From
here.
(I wasn't aware that the USNWR Specialty Rankings used such a shitty approach until I just looked up the above; at least with the normal law school rankings some statistics are involved, but with specialty rankings it seems almost 100% subjective.)
They're basically completely useless.
