40k isn't nothing, but your chances will be better out of Chicago. I say go for it. Prepare for DAT RIGOR.

UChi is worth $40k more than NU. Enjoy southside.

Either choice is reasonable at those costs (absolute and relative). Pick your preference.

I would go with Chicago.

I think if you wanted to work in Chicago, NU would be reasonable in a relative comparison at 40k difference. For anywhere else, absolutely not. It would be like choosing Penn over Harvard for West Coast placement

Can anybody comment on differences in how major firms in Chicago hire from these schools? Do most firms hire deeper into the class at Chicago or are they pretty much viewed equally?

From what I have heard anecdotally, yes they hire a bit deeper into UChi.

I guess they do. People get Sidley and Kirkland from just above median (I don't know how, but they do). V50 firms hire people below median. However, a major hurdle is convincing firms that you want to be there, and aren't just burning them for a NY or DC shop. In this way, I think that a NU student at the margin (top 1/3) has an advantage in expressing interest to Chicago firms and getting a callback-- they know he is likely staying in Chicago.

FWIW I hear about median people getting KE and Sid (along with NYC V10) from NU too.

I agree. I actually had that in mind when I posted, but I didn't spell it out. I would personally value Chicago at ~$15K per year over NU for working in Chicago, but at more like $25K per year over NU for goals of working in DC.

I think it's a toss up. 50k is about the difference where I think you can be reasonably be justified in picking either one.

More like 150k more in value if you want DC. You can get DC from below Median at Chicago. You need much higher grades (top 20%?) to have a reasonable shot at DC. Chicago is a national school. ITE, NU is a super regional school like Berkeley and UVA.

If I had 30k more at either school this would be an easy decision since I personally feel comfortable attending either. Looks like I’ll probably choose U of C based on the greater possibility to clerk (if I end up doing well) or practice in DC being worth more to me than the extra 40k cost difference
have you submitted a scholarship review at Chicago using this NU offer?

Yeah, I sent in for a review last week and am waiting to hear back. I received an extension on my NU offer until this Thurs so I'm hoping Chicago gets back to me before the deadline

Okay I did the same. I sense a lot of TLSers are in the same boat.
