I'd go to Penn if cls gives you 0. I'd probably go to CLS @ 40K over Penn @ 66K if I really, really wanted to be in new york -- these are entirely personal decisions though, I can only speak to what I would do -- but it sounds like you have family in penn so it can't be that bad.

Could you elaborate this point? I mean, I am not dead set on doing NYC big law straight out (just another clueless 0L thinking that's what I wanna do). If I do well enough in law school to clerk then I would certainly take that opportunity.

The difference between Penn with 66k and Columbia with 0k is about an extra 9 months to a year in biglaw. It sounds like you'd be way happier in NYC with your best friend than Penn with a bunch of rude Philadelphians.

I'd go Columbia unless Penn bumps up their scholarship.

The sound financial decision is UPenn but it won't be the end of the world to take CLS at sticker.

If living in NYC is something important to you whilst in school, CLS may be worth considering. Really depends how much you value it.

CLS at sticker = 290k in debt roughly at graduation
UPenn with 66k = roughly 196k in debt at graduation

Considering it's probably easier to live below estimates from UPenn, you are looking at a 100k difference in COA.

CLS has slightly better job prospects, but not worth 100k more.

Financially, the answer is UPenn. That doesn't have to be your only consideration though.

I say take Penn and just visit your friends on Megabus once in a while. Penn is not NYC, but it has pretty cool restaurants/bars/stuff.

Non-YHS T14 are fungible w/r/t clerking... Penn is a no brainer here. It's pretty easy to live well below the CoL estimates that CLS provides, but even then ~265k debt is too much (assuming no 2L SA) when you can go to Penn for under 200k.

The sarcasm isn't warranted. When I look at TLS COL estimates, I just shake my head and think back to my days of paying $1,068 per semester for my dorm during my freshman year in college. Living like a peasant is something that most people cannot do.

$325 rent a month at my UG though versus 1400+ a month for dorms at NYU had me thinking

I know a special lil area in NYC that would bring COL down dramatically, but I cannot let this secret out. If I attend a NYC law school, I am going to live there.

It is more special than Brooklyn, cheaper and closer (depending on which law school we are talking about). I have one particular law school in mind.

Thanks for all your inputs. I'll wait to see what Columbia says.

If I get into Stanford I will probably go there no matter what, but at this point it looks like I am heading to the waitlist or rejection unfortunately

Received $25,000 from Columbia. Better than nothing!

Ahhh what do I do?

I'd choose Columbia. The small scholarship is enough to make it close and you seem to want to go there more. Not a big enough difference in money not to go to the place that you would rather go. Plus, C should kill NYC biglaw
