Northwestern (150k) vs. THE FIELD

So, I am trying to get an idea of what it would take for me to pass up NU's 150k offer. Lets take HYS out of the equation since I have been rejected at S and highly unlikely at H. Aside from those schools, what would it take for me not to attend NU?

Goals are still undecided, just would like to be employed in a position that would be considered a favorable outcome for the average law student. Also, I have a low six figure savings that I am planning to use for tuition if needed.

A Hammy, Ruby, or Levvy. Really, any unamed full-tuition scholly at a peer school in the area you want to work. Free Berk for Cali, free Cornell for NY, free UVA for DC, etc.

This + 120k at UChi if you want a clerkship

i'll be subscribed here as this applies to me as well. Wondering if there is anything shy of coming off Harvard's waitlist that I could possibly hope for, or just call it an app season.

Since we'd be talking same location, how much money does everyone think it would take from UChicago to beat 150k from NW? sinfiery says 120k, is that the number everyone else agrees on?

What do you do that you saved 6 figures and why are you leaving it....

Right now my number is 90k+ if you really want DC or a clerkship. It still might be smart to take NU but UChi wouldn't kill you at that price.

Ok, now the question that applies specifically to what I'm pondering, is 90k or more attainable coming off the waitlist if one had a 175+ june retake and showed them the 150k from NW? Or should I not even bother finishing this waitlist essay?

Depends on your GPA and it's April bra. So, sure, in this hypo fairy land why not? Do you even have the 150k? Not to say that the essay isn't worth it but you haven't even taken the damn test yet.

It sounds like untar614 has the $150k at NU, is on the WL at UChi, and is considering retaking in June to get off the WL with $$.

Could work, but $90k off the WL at UChi is unprecedented based on LSN.

I will admit that I'm a 0L and have been told by much smarter people than myself to just take the money unless Chicago makes the difference less than 30-40k.

I think too many 0Ls try to posit valuations on law schools based on mostly second-hand information. Also people definitely get irrational when thinking about law school tuituon, job prospects and prestige.

It's possible, but yeah, unlikely.

Though that wouldn't push me to withdraw my application just yet. We've seen weird things this cycle at other schools. It's free to stay on the waitlist, just don't count on anything.

Yep. Just realized she also took the WL offer in August over NU with 150k lol

that relevancy.

Most of it is money my parents invested when I was born for UG. Got a scolly for that so this has kind of just been rolled over. Another part of it is from work savings.

Very lucky to be in this position though regardless of the outcome this fall.

This is just me so take it with all the salt yiu want: I would probably take 120k at ccn Penn and Berkeley (Berkeley for personal reasons). I would also take 150k at UVA or Duke over it. Maybe 150k at Mich also cause cost of living seems so much cheaper. With that said I'll likely see you in the fall.

Oh man, that's so relevant I can barely handle it. My numbers are a bit higher too. And yes, TripTrip, that's exactly my position (along with hoping a June retake may help with the H waitlist too). FWIW, I really liked NW when I was there and I think that's where I'd be happiest for the next 3 years, but thoughts of clerkships, certain gov positions or maybe academia down the road run through my mind and how Harvard or Chicago would improve those prospects. Ah well, back to that Chicago essay then.

Yeah, I think I'll still probably be seein u in the fall Mic and Flow.

Probably would duke due to cheaper COL and still being a decent city, but I'd take NW over Mich at equal scholarships due to better biglaw numbers and my desire to live in a big city and get out of college towns.

If you just want biglaw, and maybe a clerkship if possible, I wouldn't take anything less than $90k/Half scholarship (Butler) at CCN or around $120k at MVPB.

If you have geographic preferences, maybe a bit less at the top school in that area.

90K at CCN seems highly unlikely for me at this point in the cycle, but I agree with you

As someone else said, how did you save $100,000? Or was this family money?

Edit: this is relevant because if you earned it working over 10 yrs, do not blow it on law school tuition and take the NU offer. If your parents/grandparents gave it to you or left it to you, go to cls/chicago for $75k if you get it.

It's a combination of the two. But why does that matter? Money is money IMO

Why in the world should how you came into money dictate how you spend it?

Why do you dislike the idea of attending NU with a 150K scholarship so much that you have to discuss the concept of passing it up on at least three different threads, two of which you started?
