Rutgers vs. Penn State vs. Syracuse
Hope to practice law in NJ/possibly NY City
Seriously considering Rutgers, but still considering other 2 options
Rutgers $12,000 Year Scholarship - Cheapest option, Good Alumni connections in NJ, In State tuition
Penn State $20,000 Year Scholarship - Great Campus, on the rise, National recognition
Syracuse $35,000 Scholarship
Anyone have any input?

Rutgers>>>>>>>>>> the other two options, but it's still too expensive. If it were me I'd retake the LSAT or not go to law school.

Be careful with Rutgers. Their employment is a little off due to a large chunk of their graduating classes are in state and local clerkships. But paying only 13k/year isn't too bad, especially if you could save money by living with your parents.

Re: Rutgers vs. Penn State vs. Syracuse
what are the stipulations for the scholarships? How much is tuition? I know that Syracuse's tuition is 45K a year ( plus cost of living) Penn State and SYR are private, so there is no instate tuition. What PSU campus would you go to ( Happy Valley, or the on in the capital)?
edit to add: capital of Pennsylvania, that is

Penn State is too much money even with that scholarship, as you would still be looking at over six figures in debt. The campus is beautiful and the new law building is great, but there's a very real chance that you'll end up getting Sandusky'd (getting raped with a huge tuition bill and no jerb).

For Rutgers, the stipulation is a 3.0 or betternorthwood wrote:what are the stipulations for the scholarships? How much is tuition? I would be going to the campus in State College (Happy Valley)
Is Rutgers worth it with minimal debt?

If money was not a variable, would PSU be the better choice?

Best option is to retake and get a near to full ride.
If you're not willing to do that, then can you live at home (assuming your home is in NJ)? If so, go to Rutgers. If not, retake.

ETA: Went to Syracuse for UG. Have friends who attend/graduated from Syracuse Law. Do not go unless you want to settle in central new york

No, dude. You're thinking of UPenn where that pedophile football coach was. It's a shame too, I know people that turned down full schollys there because of the scandal.togepi wrote:lolwut? I think they're about equal. That said, RU is better for NJ and PSU better for PA. I think RU would open more options to you since it's not in the middle of nowhere. Granted, if you didn't have to worry about money or a job, Happy Valley is a lot nicer than Newark, but unfortunately, those two factors are paramount.NJLawStudent41 wrote:If money was not a variable, would PSU be the better choice?

Rutgers is obviously the correct answer of the three.

Money is always a variable. Unless you're egregiously wealthy, in which case, why are you going to law school?NJLawStudent41 wrote:If money was not a variable, would PSU be the better choice?

Yes, but I have to stay in the top 40%. Do you think that's my best option? I am not crazy about Camden and worry about future job prospects.dirtrida2 wrote:NJLawStudent41 wrote:What about Rutgers Camden, with a full ride?

Looks like I need to ask for a larger stipend then.NJLawStudent41 wrote:Yes, but I have to stay in the top 40%. Do you think that's my best option? I am not crazy about Camden and worry about future job prospects.dirtrida2 wrote:NJLawStudent41 wrote:What about Rutgers Camden, with a full ride?

Don't hate on camden till you've walked the university district. It's in it's own bubble and is a fairly nice community, right on the water.

Top 40% is a steep stipulation. While you should feel comfortable with your abilities, that does not mean that you will be in a better position than half of your classmates after 1L

Re: Rutgers vs. Penn State vs. Syracuse
Camden seems the best out of these options if you can get them to lower the stip at least (or just drop out if you lose it after first year). Why would you be worried about future jobs in Camden but not Newark. All of NJ is going to view them the same. At least with Camden you can also try in Philly whereas Newark your stuck in NJ alone.NJLawStudent41 wrote:

rugters is really good for NJ, although as you probably already know, the cities where the schools are located are shitty as hell, but once u r out, u could potentially be very successful be NJ, but be very tough if u want out of state
