GW vs Fordham vs W&M

Post by SteelPenguin » Tue Apr 09, 2013 12:56 pm

I am interested in taking a federal/public interest job, but I can't say that I'm so committed to PI that I would turn down big law. I am from the NY/NJ area, and I would prefer to practice in NY, NJ, PA, or DC. Fordham has a slightly higher percentage employed in large firms, but GW places a much higher percentage in PI. However, I am unsure of how much of that is because of GW's school-funded employment. I am currently leaning toward GW. W&M is another option, but I think GW would give me the better employment prospects.

GW will cost roughly 54k/year, Fordham will cost roughly 59k/year, and W&M will cost roughly $44k/year. I also have been accepted to WUSTL (42k/year) and Emory (39k/year), but I do not wish to practice in those areas.

I am going to retake in June, and after seeing my score, I'll re-evaluate my situation. Until then, I need to go forward with my current options.

Thanks, I just read this earlier today. I'm obviously looking for T14 after a retake, but if I can't make it happen, I have to choose another school. My current employment prospects without a law degree are dismal.

If you throw out GW's fake $15 hour law-school funded "jobs" it has just about the worst stats on that list.

Sorry, but none of those is a good option. I'm glad to see that you're retaking in June.

Coming from a guy who took one of those options, please don't go. It will actually ruin your life.

You would be better served getting another Bachelor's in a field that doesn't suck. Go back for CS or some shit.

it would be a huge waste of a 3.8 for you to go to one of these schools. If your June score is 168+, then re-apply next year. If it's not 168+...then just take it again in october, and re-apply.

Do not waste a 3.8...that shit is precious

How does 25K per year with 200K in debt running at over seven percent sound? That's before the school decides to cut your hourly rate from $15/hour to $10/hour because you're not being properly "incentivized" to find a job.

Of course you could just wait one year, not take on six figures of debt, and maybe go to a school with +75% biglaw/fed gov/AIII/PI placement. But that would be...rational.

As much as I didn't want to hear this, I realize it's what I should be doing. I've been trying to justify the debt and job prospects for a while now, and I just can't convince myself that it's worth it.

This is the smart move, as you obviously recognize. It sucks to wait and retake, but the long-term pain would likely be many orders of magnitude worse if you didn't.

Trust me you'll be so relieved you invested the year to re-apply. With that kind of GPA you could have so many better/cheaper options. I'll be on the look out for your "Chicago v. Penn v. Duke" thread next year
