Howard (20k) vs. Seattle U (28k)

Post by Av08 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 8:23 am

Just got accepted to both schools. NOT RETAKING!! But the here is the lowdown, in at Howard with 20k, so I would need to take a loan for 9k-11k and my parents will be covering COL expenses. As for Seattle U, I was born and raised in Washington and attended UW so I wouldn't have to worry about COL and I received a couple scholarships totaling 28k, so I would take a loan out for about 10k. Please help, seat deposits due soon.

Interested in business law and making a decent salary (don't care about six digits, just above at least 60k).

Thanks

Retake; those schools have horrific employment outcomes

Im just thinking paying 10k a year at these instituitons presents a very low risk as opposed to forking over sticker. I'm not retaking. With these options, what looks like the better choice?

Retake is the only option here. Both schools are bad and going to bad schools is a bad idea.

As usual for the stip for Howard is top 15% which is not great I know, with reuductions of 2,500 at 25%, 33%, and 50%

As for Seattle U 10k contingent upon top 50% and 18k has no stip

top 15% is "not great"? Are you kidding me? It's objectively abysmal. These schools are horrible. You have to retake or not go.

Those stipulations are atrocious. Don't go to law school on a scholarship with stips.

I think I can manage top 50% if not academia was the wrong course. But I admit 15% is rough. Any thoughts on Seattle U? I know their alumni connection in the Seattle area is extensive and they boast about the #1 writing clinic. UW is top dog in the area obviously, but attending Seattle U does not preclude me from obtaining a decent job, so this whole t-14 or die attitude is a little ridiculous. One of my concerns is their recent slip in rank.

There is not a lot of info on Howard out there and that is what is off putting, I see some graduates of Howard who do exceptionally well (and i'm not white nor black) so idk. If Howard is such a bad choice why are there graduates working at fairly respectable firms?

Also I don't think Howard is a good choice if you're not black. Anecdotally, firms go there to recruit black students.

Ok well i'm TELLING you 50% is not even remotely a concern and those are my "shitpureshit" options, instead of persuading to me to retake, how about a choice out of the two aforementioned?

You mentioned the two and didn't mention the stipulations out front. Based on the stipulations and your connections in WA, Seattle is the best option to go to. Best is very relative, and I really do echo what everyone else has said here.

What do you think "business law" means? Describe it.

If you plan on going to either of these schools and getting the work that you want (though you aren't exactly clear on that) you're going to want to finish in the top 5%. Do that at Howard and you'll get a job making more than 60. Finish below there and who knows. But I'd say at least Howard will have a bit of a push as a place firms will go seeking to improve their diversity and it's in DC.
