UVA ($$$) vs. Penn ($) vs. NYU vs. Michigan ($$)
Okay, so this has been a long time coming. I know there are ten million of these threads (trust me, I've probably read them all), but it seems that each one has its own unique info and that it's worth doing one of my own. This is meant to gauge the way others feel about these choices so that I can see how my research aligns with what you guys have to say.
Here are my top options as of now:
UVA - $140,000
Penn - $50,000 (maybe more but probably less than 100k)
Michigan - $110,000
NYU - (Waiting on aid still, probably less than 100k)
Also have offers from:
UCLA -$140,000
USC - $120,000
But haven't considered these all that much...
Here's more about me:
- I'd like to practice in CA when it's all said and done, but I'm by no means set on that.
- I have a small lifetime's worth of connections to CA, including undergrad.
- Interested in starting out in BigLaw, specifically looking at law and technology.
- Don't mind big cities or small towns, so not a huge issue.
- No significant other, so no need to worry about relocating with one.
- Dirt poor.
Anyway, I'll edit that info if it seems like more is needed. I appreciate the advice in advance!
EDIT: UVA it is!

At this point, UVA. Not even sure how this is a question.

I suppose I should add that I'm heavily leaning UVA, but want to make sure that I'm not being too hasty or overlooking something that one of my wise TLS compatriots may know more about.Bronck wrote:At this point, UVA. Not even sure how this is a question.

If Penn or NYU were somehow to come up with $100K this might be interesting, but as of now this is an easy choice.

This would only be a question if the numbers were closer. UVA is definitely better than UCLA and USC and you're getting more money from UVA anyway, so those 2 are out. And you can get back to CA from UVA. UVA and Michigan are at least the same, if anything Virginia has an edge, and again you're getting more money from UVA. So strike out Michigan. The only question is Virginia vs NYU and Penn. While Penn might have a slight edge in employment, I doubt it's worth $100k+ more (added COL differences). Same with NYU. The freedom of little debt from UVA should make it a pretty easy decision in the long run. That said, if you really like Penn or NYU, see if they'll match or get close to UVA. They're all technically peer schools, so I can't see why they wouldn't get a little closer.
Edit: You're coming to UVA's ASW this week, right? If so, you should meet some of the West Coast Wahoos. I have a couple people in my section from CA planning to head back if that's something you're concerned about at all.

UVA unless Penn comes up with $110K.

I think the real question is this: "Is Michigan's West Coast alumni network worth 30k extra?"

I have brought it to the attention of the other schools, yes. So far they have at least been willing to look at it, but still waiting for final results.ajax adonis wrote:UVA. Unless NYU has some really good deal. Have you shopped around your scholarship from Virginia to get more money from the other schools? Maybe a higher ranked school will match or exceed. Schools right now are a little more desperate than before. Milk em. A lot of times, they'll say, "That's all we can give." Keep pushing because that's often a lie.
Seems like you guys agree with what I was feeling. The reason I don't see NYU or Penn going higher than 100k is that would put me in named scholarship territory, and I wasn't invited to apply to those. I just wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, especially because deposit deadlines are quickly coming up and it'll be time to make a decision.
