IUB v. UC Hastings v. USD
I'm from San Diego, and would ultimately like to live there. IUB is in the top 25 this year, though, and I feel it may afford me better opportunities nationwide. UC Hastings also carries some national, and statewide, clout. However, Hastings' reputation is waning quickly if this years' rankings are to be believed. What do you guys think? Where would you go, with financial aid being about the same?

Rankings mean nothing unless it's T14. If you want to practice in San Diego, go to Hastings or USD.

Fin aid won't be the same between USD and Hastings unless you're doing something wrong. Contact USD for cash. I hear they're pretty generous

They offered 20k but for first year only, I wonder if they'd be willing to extend it to 3 years.Itinerant wrote:Fin aid won't be the same between USD and Hastings unless you're doing something wrong. Contact USD for cash. I hear they're pretty generous

Prime example of someone reading too much in the rankings. Also, none of these options are acceptable for what you want. What are your GPA and LSAT?

haven't heard from Hastings financial aid yet. I imagine they will give me about 15k/yr in grants on a need basis, which will mean about 80k in tuition/books/fees. USD will probably be about 90k, though I am going to try and negotiate with the financial aid office. My cost of living will be significantly lower in San Diego, seeing as I have familial support down there. I've also read that something like 1 out of every 3 lawyers in San Diego went to USD, and the legal community is a bit parochial, which may account for their slightly rosier employment figures.
2.8, 167, numerous soft factors.K Rock wrote:Prime example of someone reading too much in the rankings. Also, none of these options are acceptable for what you want. What are your GPA and LSAT?

actually the numbers are better than expected because 13% of the class gets re-hired from their former employer.

You might wanna re-think your options.

Don't take on more than 80K of total debt for any of these schools.

80k is too much I think. I'd retake and shoot for 170+. With that GPA you'll need it, and maybe you can use it to coax more money out of IUB or WUSTL or Minn.timbs4339 wrote:Don't take on more than 80K of total debt for any of these schools.
