LDS Law School Applicants '12-'13 Cycle

I wanted to start a thread to connect with other LDS law school applicants! I was thinking maybe we could at least check in to get an idea of how LDS TLSers' cycles are going (because let's be honest, we're not all going to the JRCLS). I'm interested in following other LDS users on LSN, too, because I think we're a very unique demographic.
I can start. Feel free to check my profile for my numbers / schools I've applied to, but I sent out most of my applications a couple weeks ago and have only heard back from W&L (accepted, waiting on potential $ letter) on Thursday.

Bummer. I guess we really are few and far between on here.

No I have definitely seen a bunch of people who have LDS missions listed on their LSN and they have been killing it this cycle. I just can't remember exactly who...

Hey PRgradBYU. I'm LDS and went to school in Rexburg. I applied to law schools last cycle, but I withdrew most of my applications because I decided to do Teach for America. I was accepted at BYU, University of Washington, Cornell and a few other schools before I withdrew my apps. Let me know if I can answer any questions. Overall, I didn't see my mission/LDS background hurt or help me in the admissions process. I think that the hiring process is when tapping into the Mormon network can start to reap dividends. Good luck in your cycle!

That's one of the things I was curious about. Granted, GPA and LSAT probably account for 90% of admissions decisions and that last 10% (softs, LOR, etc.) likely doesn't make you or break you, so I'm not overly surprised. I am eager to "tap into the Mormon network" after graduation, though, as I've heard similar things about it. Thanks for the info!

That's really interesting. I hadn't heard about the 3 M's but U Chicago did send me an email about the Dallin H. Oaks Society. Not that it will have much bearing on an admissions decision but do you think it's too late to apply there? Haha.

I just wish they weren't being so stingy (or selective... whatever you want to call it) with their fee waivers. I'd frankly prefer attending Northwestern over them anyway, I'll probably hold off.
Also, I just saw on your profile that you're heading their way this fall. Congrats!

Regulus wrote:Interesting.... Other than location (near Chicago the city vs Hyde Park), what do you find appealing about NU?
Anyway, I think that you will probably have some better options made available to you with that URM status (hopefully HYSC), so I doubt you will be stuck picking between the two at the end of the day.

Aside from the obvious (i.e. location, you said it), I recall hearing that Northwestern grads had slightly better job prospects. Although now that I'm looking, the law school transparency website isn't corroborating that. I suppose there's no reason not to apply to Chicago.
My top choice is Columbia, though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the encouragement!

Regulus wrote:However, once you actually get to the University it becomes a lot nicer, and the further north you go the nicer it continues to get. Accordingly, if you live north of campus, living arrangements can actually be pretty nice.
I'm going to have to agree, considering how nice those Regents Park apartments look. That's not at all what I envision when I think of U Chicago living arrangements, haha. This is obviously a bit preemptive but my wife was checking out the student housing situation for NU and I've gotta say, there's actually some decent student housing (for the area) that is relatively affordable. I imagine it'd be a bit nicer near U Chicago's campus, though.

Checking in. Applying to ASU, BYU, UofA, and UofU. My numbers suggest I'll be in at all four, so whoever shows me the money wins. Wish I could've broken 170+ so I could be competing for T14, but I've already taken three times, so I'll have to settle for regional schools with a scholly.

I bet you'll get a killer scholly from U of A, which oddly enough has the
highest employment rate of the four schools you applied to. Good luck with your cycle!

I'll check in here, I'm LDS at BYU-Idaho. I had my application filled out for BYU but could never quite bring myself to hit the submit button. So far, I've been accepted to Michigan State and University of Utah. MSU has a good LDS population, including CES-owned apartment complexes for LDS students. So I'm concerned about how hard it will be to decide! I heard that UMich is seeking more LDS students, and I already applied there, so crossing my fingers. I also applied to UCLA, Columbia, and Georgetown, among others. My main motivation though is for Native American law and clinics. It's obvious that I'm Mormon, coming from BYU-Idaho, and formerly BYU-Provo, but I've focused more on being NA than LDS in this cycle.

Well, since I've already been outed, I might as well check in. Kind of freaking about LS costs especially with a family... we'll see how it goes.

Hey I like this thread - glad I saw it on the first page!
Checking in as an LDS applicant for the 2012-2013 cycle - best of luck to everyone!

Hey, I just got accepted to MSU on a full-ride. Would you have a link to information on the CES owned apartments?
