UVA $$ V. Penn $

UVA offered me $135k and I think the most I can get from Penn is $75k (I got Wilson scholarship invite).
I like U Penn more but is there any good reason to choose Penn?
---
So, I guess UVA > Penn especially since I'll probably get less than $75k from Penn.
Thanks a lot everyone! =)

I don't think there's any reason to take Penn over UVA when the difference is 60k+.

If UVA is offering you 135k do you have any T6 offers with money?

Not yet. I got into NYU but I'm not sure how much $ they will offer.
But I think it'll be much less than what UVA's offered me.

Ivy prestige & better job placement.
The most instructive statistic is probably the % people who got offers from OCI at both schools, but we don't have it. Maybe ask around? The fact that 17% of UVa's students have school-funded jobs should raise some questions.

See how everything pans out and decide from there. There is no way I would take Penn over UVA when the difference is 60K+.

Check out LST for more accurate information but is marginally better job placement worth 60k? Also, ivy prestige means nothing, at all.
If NYU, Chicago, or Columbia throws a little bit of change your way then you may be in a tougher position. Use UVA as leverage with these higher schools. If you sent any apps to HYS I hope you snag one of them as well!

I'm extremely biased since I'm a 1L at Penn, but yeah, when I was applying last year UVA's employment stats weren't that convincing, especially compared to Penn's...
That said, for a ~$60k difference, UVA is probably the better choice unless you just LOVE Penn and hate UVA.

Penn just for job placement percentages. It's considerably better than UVA's and IMO worth the 60k. ~60% biglaw as opposed to ~35%=no question

What is the cost of attendance at each?
OP, if Columbia or Chicago offered you the same scholarship that Penn is offering you,
and you would choose them over UVA, go to Penn. If not, go to UVA. Penn's a peer of Columbia and Chicago, while UVA is not.
Also, I wouldn't turn down Penn for NYU if they are the same price. I don't think that NYU has -ever- outperformed Penn in the NLJ/fed placement.

Penn has consistently outperformed UVA both pre-ITE and during. The difference is justifiably worth 60k IMO.

Should be a fairly easy decision to pick UVA in this situation. Some $ at CCN vs. 135k at UVA is a tougher question though.

If you want NY Big Law I would say you can justify the extra money.

I looked at some historical rankings and NYU was often NCC @ #4 in the 90s.
Oh how the times have changed. Possibly because of a shift in big-law demand for prospective students which could largely be attributed to the increase in tuition within the same time period.

No the difference is NOT worth $60k IMO. I would take that UVA offer and laugh all the way to the bank.

Penn could be worth the extra. Seemed to me that UVA was struggling during this year’sOCI ―UVA’s School sponsored and Public Service employment accounted for over 40% of UVA’s placements. Just saying. . .

That's the thing. LST only reports graduates who make it into Biglaw. So even if Penn shows 58% to UVa's 37%, the gap might be even wider than we think (or narrower - doubt it though...). This is why we need info on the actual % of students who get summer offers through OCI.

I love LST, I really do, but they need to change the employment score formula somehow... its almost funny how when you put your mouse over the employment score for Penn, it says "Up to 1.5% of this score comes from graduates hired by the school" while UVA's is "Up to 17% of this score comes from graduates hired by the school".

I go to Penn, and I cannot believe how many people are insisting Penn is worth 60k more than UVA. It's not, not even if you want NYC biglaw.
First, ask Penn to raise their scholarship, and take the UVA offer to any of the T6 you get into. But if that doesn't change anything, go to UVA unless you cannot stand Charlottesville. Enjoy not having to pay off $60,000 in debt.

This. I don't know what happened recently with Penn that makes people think it's just shy of HYS. It's a great school, but it's still definitely peer with UVA.

What makes you say Penn isn't better even if you want NYC Big law? The numbers seem to show Penn has a huge big law advantage over UVA. I'm strongly considering going Penn rd 2 ED because of the numbers showing their big law placement.
