Top or Rankings of International Law Programs?

Post by TulipMelody » Thu Sep 13, 2012 4:48 am

Hi, guys,

Just wondering if you know the ranking of good law schools that have terrific international law programs? U.S. News only gave me the top ten, and Fordham is not in there.

Or any suggestions with any good international law programs?

Thank you~

Hi there. Welcome to TLS.

Why are you interested in int'l law? Because international law jobs don't really exist. Sure, with language skills and top grades at a top school, you *may* can do legal work at a firm's overseas office, but that's about it. The fancy schmancy jobs like international human rights advocate? Don't go into LS expecting to have a shot at stuff like that.

Also, specialty rankings are useless for the most part. This is the link you're looking for.

I hate to be a buzzkill when you've just joined. But most people have a crazy number of misconceptions about law school and the practice of law. Joining TLS was a great step in the right direction. Poke around the forums and you'll learn lots quick. :)

What do you mean by "international law programs"?
Many schools (including Fordham) allow you to do a summer or semester abroad. Hell, Fordham (and others) allows you to get a joint law degree in France.
However, for 99 out of 100 people it's a bad idea. Now if you have clear goals, an appropriate background, and the right things going for you, it may make sense.
If you just want to "do international law" or live/work abroad, then it is generally a bad idea.
So, before you can get good advice (rather than hurduhr international law doesn't exist, derp) you need to explain:
A) what exactly your goals are
B) what background you have that would make sense of your goals
C) any other circumstances that would indicate international law is more than a pipe dream

Welcome to TLS (and nevermind the hive mind echo chamber)

I came to law school with one goal only: to work in international law. I was fortunate enough to do that this summer and realized that although I still like the international aspect, I really don't like law. So, be sure you know what you're getting yourself into.

Haha, competing against actual Chinese nationals or ABCs with JDs is not going to be easy.
