Top Law Schools

Is the University of Illinois a good school to go to? I've seen stats claiming $100k starting salaries for the middle third.

I'm on the waitlist and just sent a LOCI.

Thoughts?

Your chance of getting a $100k/year job if you're the bottom 1/4 at UI-UC is very low. Their dean resigned after lying about all their stats. Don't trust the numbers.

The 25th percentile of reported salaries is 65k.

If you dont know anything about U of I, why did you apply...?

Just to clarify - the admissions dean resigned after lying about GPA/LSAT numbers.

I think it's an ok school in the right circumstances but you are definitely not getting a six figure job in the bottom quarter. That is ridiculous. Maybe 20-25% get biglaw.

Is there really ANY school where you have a good chance getting 100k+ jobs in the bottom 25%?

Depending on your goals, Illinois may be a good choice (I love it here).

There are a few really good threads on here with current students answering questions, so you should browse through those and you might get a better feel for the school.

Its a pretty solid school, though somewhat scary at anything close to sticker. I'm from Chicago and it is very well regarded there, but you're still competing with a bunch of others and plenty will outplace UoI.

Never believe the numbers or stats. All the information/news we see are manipulated. So research on anything you want to find. And personally I don't think that someone at bottom quarter would get a 6 figures salary. You have to think about it.

Yale, Stanford. Probably Harvard except for C/O 2011. Nothing below that.

The ABA just accredits these places without even requiring an independent audit of these stats. 45,000 JDs every year, 29,000 jobs. How, as an Illinois grad, do you ever expect to compete with U of Chicago and Northwestern grads? You have a fighting chance if you're top 10% of your class at Illinois. Don't go to Illinois.

I wouldn't go that far. Illinois has the benefit of not only being the state's flagship, but also the best school where 90% of the grads stay in Illinois (UChicago and NU grads spread out all over). Its alumni network in Chicago mid-law is unparalleled, and having the largest alumni network (from both undergrad and JD) in the 4th largest legal market is not bad.

I would by no means advise somebody to go on full tuition, even in-state, but if you get 25-50% off tuition and aren't BIGLAW or bust, it is a very solid school. (even then, I am pretty sure more than just the top 10% does well for themselves, this is John Marshall we are talking about...)
