I would like to go into election law but study and then practice in California, at least for the first part of my career. Some time down the road I would like to end up in Washington D.C.. Which law schools in California would be the best choices for election law? Which schools outside of California would be best for election law?

Ok this has me kinda curious.

Do you want to work for campaigns/parties? If so, go to law school, take a couple classes in it, but your best bet for actually working on a campaign is creating and maintaining significant ties within those organizations.

There are three programs that have any depth to them: UCI, OSU, and W&M. So if you want to practice in California UCI is your best bet. Hansen heads the program at UCI http://www.law.uci.edu/faculty/page1_r_hasen.html. That said, W&M is able to get more speakers and have more classes taught by attorneys practicing in election as a result of the proximity to DC(in fact they have a few classes on weekends in DC each term).

However, I would caution anyone thinking about election law as it is a very small bar, and often it is a secondary focus of many who do practice in the field.

Taking classes or going to a specific law school for election law is pointless. If you want to work in election law go to the cheapest school, keep your debt low and volunteer for your congressperson during the summer or volunteer for a campaign. Work on having as much connections as you can. There's no such thing as oci for election law.
