BIG Dilemma.... UMN vs UC Davis

I have to make this decision by the end of the day! :(

Currently looking at a $15k/year scholarship to the University of Minnesota (#19), and $29,000/year to UC Davis (#29). I want to end up in either CA or DC, and am looking at IP law almost exclusively.

Also, transferring is definitely something I'm looking to explore and thus have put a bit of weight toward rankings.

Any thoughts?

So you want to end up in CA or DC but are considering a law school in Minnesota?

Good luck with that one homie.

This is really a no brainer.

UC Davis by a long shot. Cheaper and you want Cali.

UC-Davis.

Despite rankings, UCD and UMN are basically peers. You want Cali and UCD is more affordable. It seems like UCD is the easy answer....

Although, if you end up in my section next year at UMN, I will be nice to you.

Good luck with your exploration of transferring. 95% chance you won't get the opportunity.

I definitely appreciate the feedback, and do understand the region-specific factor in both of these schools. One other variable is "BigLaw" which is 10%-20% possible out of UMN, but considerably less out of UC Davis.

Oh you mean the thing that likely won't happen coming out of either school? And have you looked at the NLJ numbers for both schools? They were within several percent of each other for the past several years (and UCD wasn't always behind UMN).

Yeah I did look at that data and agree its not a likely scenario, but I definitely don't want to limit options. Also, I fear that Davis would basically destroy any chance of going to dc...

UMN also destroys pretty much any chance of DC. Both schools equally limit your options. One limits it to MN and the other limits it to CA.

I'm leaning toward Davis, its just tough to give up ten ranking spots in this job market. I suppose having half the debt will make me feel better in the long run.

The ranking b/w UMN and Davis should not be a factor in this decision.

The poll is 19-1 for a reason. UMN isnt going to get you Cali. Neither will set you up for DC. UCD would be TCR even if the scholarships were the same. You are reading to much into the rankings, bro.

Emphasis on ranking number for peer schools is fucking retarded. HTH.

(If you want to work in CA, and UC-D is cheaper, then go to UC-D)

Not sure it's as cut and dry as people are making it ITT.

For one, MN has a strong IP market and assuming OP has a suitable degree, his/her chances at a market paying job won't be typical.

OP, if you're set on CA or DC right away then yes, Davis is TCR. But if you're willing to work in MN at first I think UMN could be a good option. Plus, if you have connections to CA (which it sounds like you do) it will be easier for you to come back right away than it would be for someone without those ties.

Hope it's not a moot point yet given the "end of day" thing too. In any event, good luck.

That is really where the choice starts to become obvious. I would have no intention of staying in mn any longer than necessary. I think uc Davis is the choice.

Yeah if you're really opposed to being there then UC it is.

Sorry for deliberating over what is obviously seen as a clear choice. Decision made today, withdrew from UMN (and others). Very ready to head out for California!

Thanks all-

I'm WL @ Penn/UVA, and will obviously ride them out accordingly. Trying to proceed as if they're not an option until they are.

Lol I know! I completely choked. Retaing in ten days, so if I get anywhere near my practice tests I'll be postponing a year.

good luck then, you should really sit out a year. you could get full rides to schools much better than umn or ucd if you could score higher
