(In other words, no more attacks on religious beliefs. It's Friday and my Ban Torch is itchy.)

Can I also suggest that if the Mormons don't want people attacking their religion, they shouldn't use their religion to attack others on this thread, especially a minority?

It is very hypocritical and of course cult like.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE

In an attempt to get back on topic: I have a (non Mormon) friend who went to BYU for UG, and she didn't hate it. But she's not very religious or politically outspoken, and she has very traditional ~values, so that could have been part of it.

I forgot to mention that my Master's Thesis was on group manipulation with a large section on cults.
What's your definition of the word cult? It seems like one would have to take some "artistic liberties" to come up with something that could encompass only a few religions. It seems like any fair definition would have to make the word almost synonymous with a word like "group," "religion," or "church." I've yet to hear a useful definition of cult, so I'm curious what yours is.

Seriously, take a year or two off of your cult.

You can be yourself. Diversity is a good thing.

You won't feel the need to ridicule and shun those in your cult that don't conform to your Stepford ways.

I'm just going to say again, if someone were to hate on race or sexual orientation or Jewishness in a thread and claim as a defense that their degree was in some pseudo-science Luke phrenology or intelligent design or somethong, they would be banned so fast. But, our PC mods only care when special groups are hated on.

To be fair, they let that Palestine thread get WAY out of hand.

The funny thing is, MormonChristian is more the norm at BYU and I think Taipei and I are trying to change the norm! So your stepford line doesn't really work when you're talking to people out of the so called line you refer to.

You can be yourself too. Diversity is a good thing. We're on same page there, guero.

OP, as an LDS convert considering BYU Law, I have to say, it seems like it's a tough option for you. I've had family go to BYU for a variety of degrees across the last 20 years, and have their advice handy:

The Honor Code is enforced. This is not some piece of paper, the majority of LDS members firmly and devoutly believe these things. There is no Bar review of drinking. Pre-marital co-habitation is playing with dynamite. I would not recommend attending unless you intend on complying with the honor code.

In regards to the connections, it will help. In the Mountain West, where you want to work, you will see your degree viewed very favorably. Wherever you move, there will be a strong network of pro-BYU lawyers. Not all will be Pro-You, though, if you are not a member. Some, but not all.

As far as community, the Law School is pretty open and nice. I've heard the first year is very hard, and that you will have some serious gunners, but that was from a grad 10-ish years ago. However, when you can't drink, smoke, or carouse, studying is a whole lot easier ;-) You will have interactions with Missionaries. You will have neighbors who are nice, neighbors who are nosy, and neighbors who have no interest in you.

The costs are staggeringly low, yes. Cost of Living is quite affordable too. Just visit (for like a week or two, at least) to make sure the money you're saving is worth some of the tradeoff you'll be making.

False.

It is the greatest if you naturally share similar values. Deeply religious people and people whose priorities are families love it. In fact there are at least two faculty who are not Mormon who embrace the culture because they don't have generally worry about their children with drugs, pornography or sexual deviancy.

There is also no political correctness but there are problems that arise from no political correctness.

Bottom line is that if you are heavily devoted to family and service you will be able to look over any quirks, if not the many quirks will probably irk you bad.
I tend to agree with this. My father is pretty religious and spiritual, and he has several very good friends who are like that too, but in different religions. (In some cases very different religions where you would never expect a friendship to form; but it actually does so on the basis of that religiosity/spirituality).

That being said: I think the problem with BYU is not the fact that they value certain things, but the hard line that is drawn. Absolutely no sexual conduct outside of marriage, no coffee, etc... These things are simply too extreme for me, and frankly I'm turned off by the idea that they are so steadfast on imposing certain religious morals and dictates on people who are of a different religion. That's why BYU is off my list.

I would never go to a law school with the intention of deceiving the school administration in some way; Beyond the fact that it's morally wrong - Law school is 3 full years, and you will get caught!

Neither would I, and I'm not sure why other responses are assuming that I would. IF I attended, I would obviously get married first and give up coffee (or caffeine, whatever the rule is--I rarely drink it and it has no effect on me anyway). Like I said in another reply, the dress code is not a huge deal for me either given my current wardrobe choices and the conservative nature of the legal profession.

Anyway, I appreciate the thoughtful responses, especially ones that go deeper than "NO BRO, THERE'S RULEZ THERE!" It's a personal decision whether or not I would want to abide by those rules, but I was really looking for opinions on whether the benefits of attending such a networking-driven school would be worth it in the long run.

I go to BYU UG and just from what I have heard from people at BYU Law and who have graduated from there BYU is one of the most competitive Princeton review ranked it number 4. I dont know exactly how they measure this but take it for what its worth. Its ranked upper thirties and I am sure if you are in the top 25 you will have good employment opportunities upon graduation but you may have to fight harder for a spot in upper percentiles than you may have to at similarly ranked schools..

Well you can apparently handle the rules so that should not be a block to you.

Pros: Good education. Decent price. Solid alumni network. Best school in the region.

Cons: Beyond rules, I wonder if you'll be something of an enigma for choosing to go to BYU while not being Mormon. I would also imagine that some Mormons would view you as a bit of a project.

Then again if your mature enough to handle living according to the honor code at BYU then those awkward occasions shouldn't be that big of a set back.

Bottom line: you said you could handle the honor code, like the price, and want to live in the region. I would say that it would be a solid option.
