Fordham $60k vs. NYU sticker
Aside from $20k from an education fund that will be used towards paying tuition for the first year of law school, I'll be taking out loans to pay for tuition. I have an (affordable) apartment in New York City already, and am planning to use savings (and in later years, summer earnings) to pay for living expenses.
Not sure what field I want to go into, but I am interested in a federal clerkship after law school, and possibly want to work at the USAO/DOJ, or big law followed by public interest.

Yea, you have to swallow that debt with NYU. Is there no Michigan/Duke/Northwestern with scholarship money?

NYU. The OCI statistics people are posting for Columbia look great- it's probably similar at NYU.

Waitlisted at Mich and Duke, on hold at Northwestern. But I'm a nyc native with strong family/friend ties here, and have this apartment on lease anyway and don't want to put up with moving expenses. What I like about NYU is the opportunity to do an externship at the USAO for EDNY or SDNY.Yea, you have to swallow that debt with NYU. Is there no Michigan/Duke/Northwestern with scholarship money?
But let's say all I wanted was biglaw- would nyu still be the obvious choice that's worth $60k more in debt?

Yeah, NYU's placement is significantly stronger.halfmoongirl wrote:

NYU placed 68% into federal/firms of 101+, Fordham placed 37%

Biglaw placement is where NYU's advantage is most pronounced. I know NYU at sticker price is a lot of money, but $60k at Fordham doesn't even get you in the ballpark.halfmoongirl wrote:But let's say all I wanted was biglaw- would nyu still be the obvious choice that's worth $60k more in debt?

Look, Fordham simply isn't offering you enough money. There isn't any question here.halfmoongirl wrote:Waitlisted at Mich and Duke, on hold at Northwestern. Then especially NYU.halfmoongirl wrote: But let's say all I wanted was biglaw- would nyu still be the obvious choice that's worth $60k more in debt?
An argument for Fordham over NYU can be made if your long term goals require minimal debt (eg public interest, notary law)
But for biglaw and federal clerkship, there's no discussion
disclaimer: I chose Fordham (with money) over NYU

Absolutely NYU. It is easy to get NYC biglaw out of NYU. At Fordham, it would be much more difficult, and there is much less room for error. $60K buys you an invaluable insurance blanket.

Re: Fordham $60k vs. NYU sticker
What are the chances that NYU will offer some money based on Fordham's offer? close to none, right?
My dream job is USAO-SDNY/EDNY. I talked to a lawyer who said that only grads from Columbia, Harvard, Yale, "Northeastern" (huh? did they mean Northwestern?), and Stanford get jobs there, and only after working for a white shoe law firm. Do NYU grads get hired at these hard-to-get government jobs?

For your federal gov't goal, you will probably need Biglaw, or Biglaw + federal clerkship. Knowing that, I would turn down a full ride at Fordham for sticker NYU.
PI I have no idea. But there's all kinds of PI, and I imagine the kind you're interested in is probably much, much more accessible from NYU.

That lawyer is ridiculously out of touch. That list of schools is nonsense even if they did mean Northwestern. NYU grads definitely can get these jobs as well as the other T10 schools can.halfmoongirl wrote:What are the chances that NYU will offer some money based on Fordham's offer? close to none, right?

That's either egregious Northeastern trolling or slightly less egregious but still pretty egregious and slightly confused Northwestern trolling.halfmoongirl wrote:What are the chances that NYU will offer some money based on Fordham's offer? close to none, right?

100% agree with this (and everyone else). Full ride at Fordham vs. sticker at NYU would be a closer question but here I think the choice is pretty clear.tfleming09 wrote:Given your goals, NYU by a mile
