I'd say UVA. You have a much better chance at big law in general. You can still get Texas but you'll have more markets in case you strike out in Texas.

I don't think there's a wrong answer here. UVA will give you more options if you strike out at Texas first go around, obviously, and I think 40k is enough to justify going to UVA over UT. Especially if you're set on BigLaw.

On the other hand, if you have any reason (family, QoL, etc) to pick UT, that's cool too.

Poll is really close, any more opinions?

+1. Unless there's some additional factor you haven't mentioned that would weigh in UT's favor, I'd go with UVA.

UVA and its not close. Kids at UVA get Texas Big law with bottom 3rd grades fairly easily. And an extra 40K of debt, while a decent amount, is not enough to turn down UVA for Texas. Even if Austin is 1000X better

Are you a current student and how true is this?

If, hypothetically you missed out on TX biglaw, would you rather:

Do biglaw work outside of TX? If so then UVA.
Do non-biglaw work inside of TX? If so then UT.

UVA hired 64 people -- 17% of its 2011 class -- into short-term post-graduate fellowships because they didn't have a job of any kind, let alone "Texas Big law."

This. UVA is better, but it's certainly not U Chicago or Columbia.

OP - It's a tough decision, as there is real chance of failure at both. If you strike out at Texas, you will feel like UVA would have put you in a better spot. If you strike out at UVA, you will wish you had saved the money and would have been in a better position to target smaller firms in Texas.

Let me amend my answer.

If your preference is

TX Biglaw > any law in Texas > law anywhere else - then UT

But if it is

TX Biglaw > Biglaw anywhere else > any law in Texas > law anywhere else - then UVA

Have you visited both law schools ?

Any basis for NYC biglaw as your second choice after Texas biglaw ?

Close call based on the information shared in this thread. Since Texas is your target market, why not start establishing professional ties now while saving $40,000 plus interest ?
