Top Law Schools

Hey everyone, so it seems like I've eliminated my choices to these two schools, however I'm heavily leaning towards one right now.

I received 15k/yr with a 2.5 GPA stip at Temple with out of state tuition. and 20k/yr with a 3.0 GPA stip at Penn State. My family will be paying, so I'm grateful that I will not have personal debt when I graduate. Of course, I'd want to lower the costs as much as possible for my parents.

I'm from New Jersey, looking to get into health law/policy in the future. I know I'm not realistically looking at biglaw from either of these two schools, and I'm fine with that. If it does happen, with one of the Philadelphia biglaw firms, then that's fine too. I also realize that I'd most likely be confined to the PA/NJ area (with a slight possibility of NYC), but I've been living in Philadelphia for a little while now, and I wouldn't at all mind staying for a bit.

I've gotten into both Rutgers Camden and Newark, but am not leaning towards attending either right now.

The CoA for both seems to be nearly identical for Temple and Penn State, so I'm looking for some confirmation of my mindset at the moment without my biases. Thanks so much!

If you want Philly, then Temple. Sounds like the stipulation is better too.

Essentially this. Try to get the stips removed if you don't want to retake. Temple is the much better option.

I don't agree with telling people to retake when we don't even know what their numbers are. How do we know he didn't severely under-perform his numbers for one reason or another? Maybe he is an extreme splitter?

That being said, OP what are your GPA / LSAT?

Also, what is your total cost of attendance at Temple?

My experience at Temple has been amazing so far, and I think most of my friends feel the same way. Temple has an outstanding rep in Philly, which at least gives you an edge in a sizable legal community. Oh, and Temple also feeds really well into Wilmington, DE - which I'm told is not a bad place to practice. If costs are equal, and you don't have an aversion to big city life, I'd recommend going to Temple.

CoA would be a little under ~25k/yr, housing/utilities included.

Especially considering this 2010 employment data showing only 50% of all PSU grads got any sort of full time employment after law school.

If you want a job and want to stick around Philly, go with Temple. They run this town (unless you're one of the 5 people at UPenn who decide not to leave for NYC).

Yes, exaggeration like everything else on this site. But for the most part Temple runs Philly. Villanova and Rutgers have a little impact, but Temple is for the most part the big placer among schools in the area. The jobs that Temple grads want are jobs that UPenn folks aren't going for so they have a leg up on most the competition. Not saying that Temple is the land of "Milk & Honey" but they do better than other similarly ranked places, and definitely better than Penn State and their "Post-Apocalyptic Central PA" job market.

This just came as a thought - but does Rutgers Newark not have that much reach into NYC?

Should you count on getting NYC from Rutgers?
