Top Law Schools

In employment stats at several schools I've been looking at, there are "JD preferred" jobs listed... some of which pay $120k/ year. Anyone know what these jobs are, exactly? In-house council (wouldn't that require a JD)?

Contract negotiations come to mind. However, I have no idea how common those are.

This is sort of the million dollar question. No one really knows. Could be solid jobs where a JD helps (consulting, contracts, maybe some form of HR, maybe some kind of finance job), or it could be pretty much a non-legal job that gets labeled that for the school's benefit. Hard to say.

I think working at for the law school admissions office is JD preferred, even though most of them just do data entry. Would working in a bank's compliance office be JD proffered or required ya think?

Not sure about that.

I know that other professional includes teacher, business, but nothing like consulting. I think that some JD preferred jobs could be awesome and others might be the people working in LS office (btw, what do these people do? I've not met one. Do schools hide them in a dungeon?).

Also consider that at least some of these students are JD/MBA. Those are probably the ones getting the cool JD Preferred jobs.

I work in insurance. In the department I'm in, manager level and above is "JD Preferred". IE, it's required, but you're not actually acting as a lawyer.
(FYI, unless you have extensive insurance experience, this isn't an entry level position).

Hm. Well. I pulled this from Colorado Law. Maybe insurance manager is different though.

An "other professional" position is one that requires professional skills or training but in which a JD is neither required nor particularly applicable, such as accountant, teacher, business manager, nurse, etc.

If I come out unemployed I'll be taking a "jd preferred" position at AreJay & Sons Mechanical doing hvac grunt work + giving the K's a once over. I'll call myself Executive V.P. of Business Operations or some such shit. At least that way I can get LRAP for my terrible use of 3 years and $150K
