SLS, NYU(50K), or UChi(15K)

This is for a friend, I've been telling her to go to SLS. I, and she, wants further confirmation of this.
Basically, she does not know what she wants to do yet, or where to end up, but might want litigation or public interest.
She's paying sticker at SLS. 15K from Uchi total, and 50k from NYU total.
I told her that 50,000 was not worth all the stress that comes from grades and competition..also, since she does not know what she wants to do just yet, I said SLS would give her the most flexibility

Your friend should have negotiated her scholarship offers.

The obvious answer here is SLS. It provides the most flexibility for the degree, which is the most important factor considering that she's not sure what she wants to do. 50k from NYU and 15k from Chicago is not nearly enough to warrant any changes in thought.

Unless she absolutely wants to end up in NYC, then I'd just pay the extra to go to Stanford.

SLS is in a better location and has a nicer campus than any other top law school (maybe Berkeley is close to equivalent), unless you like crappy NE or Midwest weather.
SLS has better job prospects than Chicago or NYU.
SLS has a great LRAP, which very few people need to use unless they want to.
50k over a lifetime of earnings is really not a substantial amount of money.

SLS is the obvious choice, but Washington Square Park > Palo Alto, friendo.

$50k is on the "not worth it" side; go to Stanford.

Retake.
Stanford is the easy choice here unless you have some extreme affinity towards Chicago or New York. And even then, Stanford is the right choice.

This. $50k just isn't enough to justify the significant drop in job prospects to NYU. Stanford just opens up a ton of doors, and it's something that'll stay with you for the rest of your career/life. The pass/high pass/gold star/smiley face grading system is also a nice plus. The weather ain't bad, either. Really, what's not to love.

To add to what everyone else said, you will probably be much happier at SLS. Everyone from there just seems to love the school so much. Which is not to say that NYU people don't love their school...but you can tell it's not the same. When you live in Paolo Alto, everyone gets a top firm job, and admissions heavily weights soft factors, life is probably very good.

can't tell if the bolded is a joke. if it is, damn my ability to read text-sarcasm. if it isn't, i respectfully disagree. There are three law schools that price shouldn't be a major factor when considering attending. SLS is one of them.

Hey, friend of the wang dude, how are you smart and accomplished enough to get into Stanford yet not smart enough to realize you should go there. Those don't compute. There is no wrong choice here, unless you choose to go to Chi or NYU.

Thought so.

SLS for the superior job prospects, better LRAP (is NYU's IBR based?), lack of fine distinctions in grades/safety for bottom half of the class, better flexibility of the degree inside and outside of legal employment, and less competitive environment. Only thing I think NYU+Chi beat SLS on are location.
You're in for 200k+ either way--you need to maximize either biglaw job prospects or school support for low-paying jobs and Stanford wins on both.

Respectfully, each to his own.
While I like NY and Chi as cities, I personally find Northern California to be paradise, but that's just my opinion.

I usually chase the money, but Stanford is definitely worth 50k more.

Also isn't Stanford relatively generous with financial aid? HYS all offer grant aid since they dont have merit scholarships and the amounts can easily reach 50k... Thus unless your friend's parents are in relatively high income brackets (going by H's method it would have to be 150k+) there would be usually around 15k to 30k total in financial aid at least.

Think about the alternative though. NYU's team name is the Violets.
