Is U MN worth 5k more than UHLC per year? I don't care where I end up. Not interested in PI, but need a solid job when I graduate.

From: Kansas
Ties: Houston (?) live here now - have worked here for 2 years.
Debt:
UMN - 75k is best guess (45k tuition + 30k books/ins/living)
UHLC - 60k? (44k tuition + 15k books/ins/living?)

Want to do: Best guess would be insurance defense - either coverage or tort defense. Preferably with outside counsel.

Ties to Houston makes UH the obvious choice.

Go to Houston.

is that per year or over 3 years? the 15K looks like it's a yearly amount, but 30K in MN per year seems ridiculous

Figures are total. I have some savings to cover COL - higher figure in MN because a) I won't be working at all and b) I'll have to pay to move there, and state income tax.

Not if he doesn't' want to live/practice in Houston.

Is Minn in a nice college town? All I know of Minn. is from Young Adult. Houston is getting hot again. I'd probably consider U MN especially since our tuition at UH might be going up

Minneapolis is a great city- not really a college town though. Also, UMN tuition keeps rising.

If you want to practice in MN, go to MN. If you want to practice in Houston, go to Houston. If you don't have a preference between Houston and MN, go to Houston (because of your ties). If you don't want to practice in either MN or Houston, you shouldn't be going to either school. Frankly, paying full-freight at either school is... risky.

I have yet to visit (will be at ASW), but I would think that it would be like a college town nestled in a big city Since there are 50,0000 undergrads with most living near the campus.

I went to Iowa State (Ames) an Texas State (San Marcos), both have about 30,000 undergrads and are definitely college towns.

Seems like UMN will have the best of both worlds, big city and college town.

In most cases, it's not really smart to relocate for a regional school that resides in a location with which you have zero ties.

Yeah - I know :) I was accepted to the PT program and will be working at least some my first year. Between that and savings, I won't need to take out any loans for first year. I'm thinking about switching after the 1st year to the full time program.

Those are totals bro.
RC fail. I'd vote Houston because it is cheaper and you have ties. Either is fine at the cost then, although I'm also skeptical of the numbers for COL. I guess that doesn't include costs for out of pocket expenses, only loans? Im confused how we're talking 5k or 10k COL per year. If you buy a 20,000 car, the fact that you pay it all in cash doesn't make it free. Obviously no loans is better, but yeah... Houston.
