"W&L does reasonably well placing graduates in judicial clerkships: a fifth of each class typically clerks, with about half of those clerks finding employment with coveted Article III federal judges", What's up with this? It seems like Washington and Lee does better than some T14 schools when it comes to clerkships

W&L does very well with Art. III clerkships but they're numbers can sometimes be deceiving. With such a small sample size, a couple of students either way can drastically effect the numbers.

One year they could place 15 people in Art. III clerkships, which would be around 10% of the class, but the following year they could only place 7 people in clerkships (5%) of the class. A 5% decrease but only an eight person decline. Tread softly with percentage numbers coming out of small schools.

But to go back to your original point, I think that W&L has a good reputation among judges.

Edit: Disclaimer: I will most likely be attending W&L in the fall and couldn't be happier about my decision.

I just came back from the admitted students weekend and it seems like their reputation and alumni network is extrememly strong. Many older lawyers and judges remember when WL was T18, and still see them in that way.

There is also a very good change I will be attending. If I do, Cwall, we should organize a west wing marathon in the fall.

I think the question is, how large is the pool of federal judges that are hiring W&L grads? Wouldn't be surprised at all if there is a pipeline from W&L to W.D. VA judges.
