What do you want to do? Where do you want to work? Where are you from?

These are very distinct options in terms of setting & placement. Obviously Texas for job placement in Texas; Cornell & NYU for NYC placement after deciding whether you want a rural or urban setting.

If you're not looking to work in TX I'd def pay the extra 20-30k, to live in NYC for 3 years as opposed to Ithaca.

I want a job. And I don't want debt. I like the pace of Austin and Ithaca but I would love to live in Manhattan. ummm..

I'm trying to be conservative considering the market.

I think the difference would be more like 70k.

My family is in Texas. But honestly I am tired of the south and would prefer a place a little more liberal. But I imagine I can pull that from Austin?

I think this is NYU vs. UT, and it depends on which region you want to work in. The NYU offer would be hard to turn down, but if you want to work in Texas, I think UT would be the right choice. UT would also give you some access to California and Louisiana, though I'm sure NYU would give you access to those, as well. I would not even consider Cornell with those other two options on the table.

And this is just a single anecdote, but I took an offer to work at a boutique lit firm in Texas this summer (I go to UT), and the only other SA is a 2L at NYU. So NYU can also get you to Texas, I just don't think it will put you in a better (or even as good as) a position as UT for Texas firms.

Just saw your latest response. I've never lived in NYC, but I will say Austin is definitely the most liberal town I've lived in in the South (originally from GA). I love it here.

Edit: Your family is in TX, so do you have a $138k scholarship paying in state or out of state tuition? If you're paying in state with a $138k scholarship, then I would definitely say UT.

Would you prefer a place more liberal for just 3 years or long term? There is no guarantee that you will be able to stay and work in Austin. It's a very small market with a lot of people wanting to stay.

If you want NYC biglaw, go NYU or Cornell. Texas isn't even in the conversation.

If you go to NYU or Cornell, you have a very good chance at it if you don't fuck up.

I see that it is overwhelmingly in favor of of NYU. May I ask the rationale?

Also do you think I can bargain with these scholarships. Ask Cornell or NYU for more.

I also need to check the stipulations of these scholarships....

I vote NYU. The difference is probably significantly more than 70K due to COL differences, but I think in your case NYU is the safest bet for biglaw. If you ever decide you want to come back to Texas, NYU with your ties to the state can get you back. Austin is a tough market to crack, regardless of which school you go to, so you might as well get the sure thing which is NYC. Cornell's only strength is NYC, but since you have NYU with $$, it really shouldn't even be considered at this point.

It never hurts to try and bargain a scholarship.

Also, NYU is the clear choice here.

NYU will likely not give you more, that is one of the highest scholarships that isn't a full scholarship and the other offers don't really "compete" with it.

If you want Texas, NYU isn't a bad choice either. There is a strong group here of Texans that routinely go back to Texas. I would definitely try contacting them to ask them what the process has been like. Anyone with real (I know, vague word) ties to Texas can get back to it from NYU.

I'm thinking NYU as well... sounds like you have family/ties to TX meaning that you can get back there if in the next couple years you have a change of heart/find a firm in a part of TX that is to your liking, but NYU will give you the best overall chances of employment and of course be strongest in NYC itself.

NYU tuition is 5k less than Cornell a year. Difference in Scholly is 30k - I understand COL difference between NYC and Ithaca but 70k? seems out there, unless I'm missing something.

COA for NYU: $74,704
COA for Cornell: $74,680

oops, I was talking about the difference between Cornell and Texas. I think if Cornell will match my Texas Scholly I would go there?

Cornell versus NYU:

Ithaca is not that great. It good, but not great. Coming from someone who knows the area well. Also, Cornell holds a lot (if not most) of their interviewing events in NYC.

At NYU, you'll be in a dynamic city. There will also be more chances to network in NYC (concentration of NYU law alums, easy access to law firms, can go to state and fed courts to sit in on trials/oral arguments, etc.)

Faculty at NYU is generally speaking better: research and pedogogy wise.

I would choose NYU over Cornell if you want to work in NYC or Northeast. (Texas has a leg up in Texas and the south.)

Does NYU really give one a better shot at biglaw than Texas.. considering the market in Texas.

I hear a lot about NYU grads without jobs. And I thought NYU was very regional despite its rankings.
Is it reasonable to assume that I will have about 100k in debt if I go to NYU with the 75k scholly. In contrast to about 40K from Texas for living expenses. I have the Chancellors scholarship and I think that only covers the school, no living expenses. Would it be realistic to ask them to cover some of my living expenses as well considering the "value" of the scholarship (138,000) is about 30k more than the cost of school.

Cheerio,

Angry

For NYC, not for Houston or Dallas. I don't think there is a single biglaw office in Texas that does not interview at UT OCI. In NYC, NYU >>>>>>>> UT. In Houston and Dallas, it's more likely NYU = UT or NYU < UT. I assume he is talking about the Texas biglaw market since he said "considering the market in Texas" and the obviousness of NYU's advantage over UT in NYC.

Sorry for not being clear. I just meant the Texas seems to be doing well. I am really looking for the most secure path to a career.
