Help me justify a decision I already made!

Post by sarahmargie » Wed Mar 07, 2012 11:20 pm

Do y'all think I made the right choice to put down a seat deposit at UT, where I will pay full price, when I had full scholarships at Texas Tech and Oklahoma City University? (I probably would have had a full ride at Texas Wesleyan but I withdrew.)

I should pay $90,000 more to go to UT because my increased lifetime earnings will easily balance that out.
And my chances of being above median at UT are not much lower than at those other schools.

Is all this true, or did I just get badly punked by USNWR rankings?

While I wouldn't say that UT at sticker is the best decision in the world, it is faaaaar better than those other options you posted.

This, a thousand times over. Not even in Lubbock or Oklahoma City are those schools viewed as superior to UT. TTU and OCU are both a joke. You correctly chose the only realistic option out of those three.

They were not my only options, I could have gone to UH at sticker or St. Mary's with $10,000 or Baylor with $15,000. That just seemed so depressing to me, because those schools are expensive even with the scholarships.

Still made the right choice. Enjoy UT and don't look back!

made the right choice for sure...but next time, you might want to ask tls beforehand...it would be a sucky feeling to see everybody commenting about how you made a horrible decision etc

Good choice.

In other news, this thread title should be the title of almost every 0L thread out there. Because let's be honest, that's usually what they're looking for.

Not that it would/should change the decision outcome, but how in the hell did you manage to get in UT but get that low of an offer from Baylor and absolutely no scrilla from UH?

This is a good question. And why didn't SMU accept me even though I applied to SMU in September? I am not a URM. My personal statement didn't seem particularly risky at the time, but in retrospect I guess it was. I was bothered about underperforming my numbers until I got accepted to UT. Now I just think I had a weird cycle.

Because a 168 isn't any better to SMU/Baylor/UH than +1 point to whatever their current median LSAT is. SMU would much rather have a 164/3.75 vs. 168/3.4. SMU knew you wouldn't accept because they were not going to be in a position to offer you a scholarship (you only helped one of their stats), and your LSAT was UT-worthy. They knew you would have better options, and it only hurts their acceptance rate to accept you.

SMU offered big schollies to splitters last year. They appear to be doing the same this year:

I received a modest scholarship from UT so I am slightly less tortured over this decision than I was last week.

I'm from the Northwest and even with the tiny drop in rankings, I feel like I made the right decision. UT is a world class university system (in some areas). Austin is one of the coolest cities in the country. Every single firm in Texas is about 50% full of UT grads. What else can I say to help you feel better about your decision?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
