HOWEVER, I have pause.

I want to end up back in Texas. Fo sho. However, I also want big law.

I'm assuming you have ties to texas. I might do Northwestern just because it gives you a better chance at biglaw. You can always go back to Texas with a Northwestern degree. If you ever change your mind,NW will also open up more doors in terms biglaw NY etc....

Maybe if the topic was T10 with ties or UT, I'd agree...

I read that as implying that she left texas and now wants to come back. I'm implying that she has ties and she didn't mean it as going back for vacation lol.

Are you dead-set on Texas Biglaw, or would you be willing to move to another major city, at least for the short term?

I would think your absolute chance at landing Biglaw anywhere would be significantly higher at NU.

the preference is as follows:

1. Texas big law
2. any job in texas making more than $100K
3. big law other places
4. jobs other places making more than 100K
5. any kind of legal employment in texas
6. any kind of legal employment elsewhere

what is giving me pause is the new nlj percentages - nu at 52% and texas at 21%. otherwise i'd go to texas no contest. what do the other 80% at texas do?! is there a large number of firms who just aren't njl 250 in texas that are paying decent private sector salaries?

Are you from Dallas, Houston, Austin, or other?

While I can't know how Texas law firms look at Northwestern students compared to Texas ones, I do know that competition for spots at Texas firms is very low at NU because not a lot of people look to that market. On the other hand, Texas big law is a lot more competitive at Texas. To the extent that firms have made an investment in coming to OCI at NU and want to hire a few NU grads, it may be easier to get a callback and offer coming from NU.

There are a number of non-nlj 250 firms, but not enough to make up the 30% disparity. If it's TX biglaw, then NU with Texas ties probably makes you stand out from the crowd a bit more. If it's TX mid-ish law and general legal employment in TX, then UT will probably be more advantageous; all other places (e.g., NYC and Chicago) it's NU by a considerable margin.

Texas lawl firms are going to want to know why you made this decision. Make it easy on yourself. Stay in Texas.

Grew up in Houston, went to UT, spent a quick 2 years working in Kentucky, now work in San Antonio.

I don't know if it's the same at NW, but Chicago people with Texas ties have no trouble getting Texas biglaw.

I think you'd be OK at either one, but I would probably choose UT if I were in your shoes. Houston seems to have a pretty solid job market. The difference in debt would be substantial. You will risk a greater likelihood of unemployment, but it's probably worth it if you're not too risk averse.
