Cardozo vs. Howard

Post by Imezing » Thu Feb 16, 2012 7:47 pm

Hey everyone,

My cycle isn't fully complete yet but I wanted to get your guys' opinion on the schools that are at the top of my list. I was accepted into Howard with a $17,500 scholarship (leaving me roughly 11,000 to pay per year) and Cardozo with a $25,000 scholarship (leaving me roughly 19,000 to pay per year). I currently live in CA and would like to practice here but I am not averse to practicing in NY/DC. I am an African American and I know that a Howard JD affords employment opportunities way greater than their current ranking (or non ranking I guess.) My question being is Cardozo worth the extra $8,000 per year?

Thanks

Cardozo places worse and has a higher COL on top of the 8k per year. You have to be at the top of your class for both schools but at least at Howard you have the tiniest bit of extra cushion.

Howard is a boss-star status T3 law school.

Any other opinions? I was able to get Cardozo to raise my scholarship to 30k a year and also found out that Howard's scholarship is only guaranteed for the first year. I have read in other forums that their stips could be as high as staying in the top 15% to keep it for the 2nd and 3rd year. I am having a really tough time deciding between the two, so all comments and/suggestions are welcome.

Howard. It's like the Harvard for black people who can't get into T14 schools.

Doesn't Dozo have pretty shitty stipulations on $$$?

I applied to upwards of 12 schools but these are my best offers (unless I get off the waitlist for Emory, UCI or GW)

My stips are pretty solid. No academic requirement. As long as I don't get kicked out of school, I keep the scholarship.

I wouldn't go to Howard. It is only guaranteed for the first year. Also, they have a low bar passage rate. You will still have to do well at Howard to get those Big Firm jobs. I think they place 15% according to NLJ, whatever it is called. I'm sure it would be easier to get back to Cali if you went to Howard, but that's real expensive if they take away that scholly. DC is just as pricey as NYC.

Cardozo is a good school. It is in NYC. Since you are black, you can apply to many diversity programs.

However, you need to visit the schools you were waitlisted at. Talk with admissions, show them your interest....
