Top Law Schools

Hello, I got into UMich summer start!!! I was not ED but requested summer start because I hate my job and would love to leave it 3 months earlier.

I haven't heard back from anyone else but Georgetown (accepted, I wish I could go to more schools than one). I am leaning towards Michigan even if I get into more programs (with the exception of Harvard, Yale and Penn).

I am excited about Michigan and I have been mentally planning my life there, anyone else get in for the summer term and want to share their thoughts on the factors prompting them to accept or deny the offer?

As I see it the PROS are...
* Lower cost of living in Ann Arbor relative to DC, NYC or other large cities
* One semester ahead (meaning you are job searching while everyone else is still in school)
* I hear the quality of life is amazing and Michigan students give very favorable reviews of their experiences
* They have got to have a strong alum network
* Its UMich, Big Blue, come on just saying it makes me happy, there is no doubt it is highly ranked and I will take pride in going there

The CONS are...
* Lack of a major legal market (unless you want to count its proximity to Detroit which I do not), which might make it necessary for me to travel in summer to work or have limited options when I want to work during 2L and 3L - this is a big con for me, I want to work and traveling in the summer will be difficult for me because I have a partner
* THE COLD! I don't think I can drive in snow.

I just want you to know that driving in the snow is honestly not that bad. Don't worry about it. If you are living in Ann Arbor, they will salt and plow the roads a lot. I have lived in Michigan my whole life, and I can only think of two times when I was driving that the snow really bothered me. I live in the country, and I drove home tonight on dirt roads that had not been plowed, and we had about five inches of new snow. There were trees and powerlines down, multiple cars in ditches, and the power is out at my house. As long as you drive slow, you will be fine. It is not as bad as everyone thinks it is. I mean, people wouldn't live in the north if it was.

In a similar position, and interested in what people have to say.

I have heard that the summer class gets ridiculously tight due to their time on the campus together before everyone else is there, and that they have an easier time with 1L internships. Not so sure beyond that.

I think that s/he is worried about being one of those cars.

I might take u up on a look if I'm desperate for a temp place but right now i am thinking of purchasing a home if I can find a good opportunity (buy at a depressed price, sell 3 years later). Could I claim MI residency in 2L by doing this?

If not I would like to find a fully furnished place close to campus kind of on the higher end, any ideas where to look?

I think SS is such a cool option. I also heard the SS people become very tight.

That is comforting, the idea of it all was stressful

I am a 1L summer starter, and it's really an amazing experience. I am so, so glad I did it.

I don't have a car and have not found it to be a problem, so I wouldn't worry about driving in the snow -- you can get by decently here without driving at all.

Could you talk a little more about your experience? Did you feel like it was hard to get to know the non-summer starter 1L's? What was the workload like during the summer?

I loved loved loved summer start. It was amazing. The whole section gets to know each other quite well, because you're the only 90 people around. You basically have the law school to yourselves. You basically have Ann Arbor to yourselves, really, and Ann Arbor in the summer is lovely (if a little warm for my taste). You get to be here for the art fair, which is pretty fun. It was great to only have two graded classes - of course studying for finals wasn't fun, but it could have been much worse. The workload day-to-day was very manageable. There was definitely plenty of time during the term for trips to Dominick's, barbecues, etc.

I will admit I don't know the fall starters as well as I might, but I think it is normal to know your section best, regardless of which one you are in. I have gotten to know some through various student groups I am involved with, and have made good friends with the ones I live with, but when you don't have any classes with people, it is a little harder to meet quite the same number of them. But of course, that is true whether you're in ABCD or EFGH or IJKL or MNOP.

most people view this as a pro because they place very well in a lot of the major legal markets (NYC, SF, Chicago, DC). because so many students are going to these different markets, there isn't the potential of over-saturation (like there is with the majority of Berkeley grads trying to get jobs in CA, or NYU grads trying to get jobs in NYC, Georgetown grads-->DC; etc.).

If I get into UMich I'd like to have the summer start, tbh. I'm ready to get crackin and I like the idea of being with a smaller group to start. Congrats to all of those who are already in!

I bought a new Blue Cadillac cts coupe this past Saturday, it was the first time I ever bought a car with an interesting color, and when I got home from the dealership I got the umich acceptance. My first thought.... Go big blue!

i kno it's early but I have a great apt available to sublet this summer at a good price. The apt is in a fun location and a short walk from the law quad.

Having lived in Michigan essentially my entire life, you'll be fine even with RWD, unless you're planning on drag racing across the state in January or something.

Plus, it's AA, the city with the boldest pedestrians on God's earth, so you'll never go over 5 MPH anyway.

Plus, you got a Cadillac. Nice.

Summer starter. How much should I expect to pay for a decent sublet over the summer?

Lol ok, for clarification, I bought a home after the crash, I will be selling it and thought I would then be able to purchase a lesser home in Michigan (which I am realizing is a pipe dream but what are the requirements for declaring residency and getting instate tuition?) or sell it and rent a nice one bedroom with my partner and I's combined resources. My caddy was a huge expenditure but I kept my car before that for 12 years! This is the first car I ever bought new and I only half regret it. Why else have I worked a crappy job for years? My car may not be good for Michigan though, it's not awd, but it is blue.

There's also a nice link for summer starters on the admitted students' site that answers some of the questions you've posed as well as some of the questions that I had before I read it. The page does make it seem like they're selling the summer start like they would be selling a blue cts at cadillac dealership ( ) but I found it pretty informative.

Also, after some light debating it's been confirmed that it's "Let's go Blue" or "Go Blue!" but never go big blue.
