This is so awesome! What a great piece of data for Wayne State. I bet their admissions office would love this. I can't wait to see some more cities.

I would do it if I had time, but I'm still in UG, working 40 hours a week plus 10 of volunteering, and have 2 kids. Maybe in the spring when my volunteering and work are done I'll do some.

I'd love to see Des Moines, but there aren't any NLJ 250 firms. Any suggestions on what resources I could use to do this research for a smaller market?

I glanced at the NALP site. I don't think it shows what school each went to though. Maybe the individual websites will though. I know Nyemaster Goode does, but you have to go through each profile.

This is very fascinating. Living in MI and with several friends at Wayne, I knew they placed well as a regional school, but this is shocking. The admissions office would love this info as their students frequently decide between MSU and Wayne.

First, Wayne State's class sizes are nearly twice as big (~510 v ~260). When you control for class size, MSU is doing a fair bit better. Also, both place pretty anemically relative to their total number of grads... though taking out Honigman and Cohn really makes this challenging to interpret. Not to detract from the efforts of OP (thank you so much for undertaking this!) but that's sorta like not including K&E in an analysis of Chicago.

OP, thanks for this. As someone who is interested in MI schools and working in MI I found this to be very helpful. As far as Honigman goes, the general trend seems to be shying away from Wayne and local grads outside of UM.

This is what I remember as well for the past 2-3 (Summer 2011, Summer 2010, Summer 2009 [maybe]).

So I take it then that your analysis did not include firms such as Pepper Hamilton, Jackson Lewis, or Foley Lardner? Firms with offices in Detroit but not base offices.

I also think it's important to not that outside of the NLJ250 there are some very good firms that pay very well (keeping in mind the lower COL) like Bodman, Plunkett Cooney, Foster Swift, Jaffee, Howard & Howard, Sommers Schwartz, Hertz Schram, etc. (not an exhaustive list)

I only included the firms that showed up on the NLJ 250 list as having base offices in Detroit, and 1 in GR - I think it was 7 total. I could not see your second link (subscribers only) but yeah, I think I definitely should try to include Honigman in here. I may have underestimated the impact that one firm could have on the final statistics, although, I dont think that it will affect the overall idea that some non-t14 schools can be worth it for biglaw (or "mid-law?" if NLJ 250 isnt biglaw to you - didnt read the "what is biglaw to you" thread) in the right circumstances (scholarship, ties to region, etc).

I believe this is correct although I dont have the ability to check ATM. If I get a chance, I will try to add this data in.

They ordered it by # of attorneys so it get's smaller the farther you go. Otherwise, I agree. I just thought this might me a helpful analysis as well.

Not surprising. A small percent of Mich grads actually want to work in Detroit. Many that work there only do so because they got shut out of Chicago or New York. Even Michigan State grads could probably venture out of the state to find jobs if so desired. Detroit firms know that for the most part, Wayne State grads want to stay in Detroit for whatever reason. It's a safe investment. Good for Wayne State though.

any chance of t14ers with absolutely zero ties getting a gig in the motor city? just a 1L but the more I learn about it the more intrigued I become. I also grew up watching home improvement on the reg and thought detroit would be awesome.
