WUSTL vs Northwestern

Post by scity » Fri Jun 10, 2011 2:12 pm

I was pretty set on attending WashU, deposited and was planning a trip there for next week... until I got the e-mail from Northwestern today that I'd been accepted off their waitlist. Now I'm so torn. On one hand Northwestern is amazing and I would love to be in Chicago, but on the other I have a small scholarship to WUSTL and I've gotten really excited to be going there. I also don't know where I want to practice and I think that NU will give me more options, but St. Louis has a much lower COL. I need some outside opinions because I just can't be rational about this choice right now!

What are your goals?

I want Chicago biglaw. I got a 30k/year scholly from Wash U, but I still took NU when I got off the wait list. I guess I'm crazy, but I figured that the difference in earnings over the course of my entire career would offset the debt. We'll see I guess.

WUSTL is quite a ways behind other schools when it comes to getting Chicago biglaw (Chicago, Northwestern, Umich, people from other T14s with ties, and Illinois). So, if that is what you want, NU is the smart decision.

According to another thread it's 5K. No matter if it's year or total, that's not enough. NU is TCR here.

We're talking $50 a month on a 10 year loan repayment if it's 5k total. No doubt it's NW. Under 60k, and it's a no brainer unless you need to work in St. Louis - then it's close.

It depends on the $ from WUSTL and your career goals. If it's only a meager scholly, like $15 or 20k per year then I think Northwestern is worth the little extra. Secondly, I'm not informed about WUSTL's LRAP, but if you're going for PI, NU's LRAP is great. Likewise, NU places better in Big Law and has the national reach that WUSTL seemingly lacks.

NU, without a doubt. This is a really easy decision. $10,000 is nothing compared to the $180,000-$210,000 that these schools are going to cost you.

The IP boost from chem degree isn't weak and very capricious. You are going to want the placement power of Northwestern.

+1. You'd need about 90-100k in scholarship money to even make this a legitimate question. NU by a landslide.

I hear Northwestern is in a really dangerous area. The north shore can be rough.

Northwestern without a doubt. You'd be surprised with how cheaply you can live in the Chicago area if you are willing to use the L.

Yo I don't care what brand of truck those soccer moms are driving, they are DANGEROUS.

And if you wander too far north, you end up in like... Winnetka or Wilmette or some shit. I don't want to get shanked for my Gucci bag, thanks.

I had a 90K scholly to WUSTL and would have dropped it to go to NU at sticker.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
