Does W&M have a national reputation???

Does W&M have any credit as a national school or is it strictly regional? Since it is the oldest law school and has consistently been top 30, I was hoping that it would at least have recognition in the Northeast outside of VA (e.g. NYC)

No one outside of VA knows what a W&M is.

east coast recognition=/= national recognition

I have no idea about the northeast, but I'll tell you that nobody on the west coast has ever heard of W&M. So, no. It does not have national recognition.

Its reputation is regional, but along most of the Northeast region, which includes lots of legal markets.

Had you heard of the University of Virginia (aside from sports) or Vanderbilt or Emory before you applied to law school?

I said it's a REGIONAL school, but the region extends throughout lots of the Northeast, not just VA

UVA and Vanderbilt - yes (they are in major sports conferences), Emory - no.

But whether people on the opposite coast have heard of the school is irrelevant.

The issue is that OP is considering both Duke and W&M and is trying to convince himself that he will have the same career opportunities at W&M. He won't.

And even if we're going to separate schools into "national" and "regional" - which is a pointless exercise that's not really based on anything - W&M's influence doesn't travel much north of the Mason-Dixon line, so it's hard to say it extends to the "Northeast."
