Top Law Schools

Hey, pretty sure I have the answer to this, but wanted some other opinions.

NU w/scholly (~70-85k debt)
Fordham w/scholly (-5 to 5k debt)

Want biglaw (corporate restructuring), have clear ties to NYC, but am very willing to permanently move elsewhere.

Northwestern is worth the extra 70-80k. Biglaw from Fordham is pretty tough...

Go to Northwestern.

NU will travel to NYC better than it stays in Chicago to be honest. I'd take NU if you want big law.

However, Fordham with no debt is pretty fucking sweet. Is it going to be no debt because you are going to carve massively into your savings? Or because you got a full ride?

I'd still take NU, but you can't go wrong here.

Generous scholly, GI bill, planning on renting a room in NJ from friends, and savings.

Ok, well I think NU is worth 80K more debt than Fordham. Below median at NU can still get big law in NYC, though it gets pretty sketchy the further from median you go.

You'll limit your big law chances pretty severely at Fordham, but you'll have no debt, meaning you can work in a small firm comfortably. Though I'd still go to NU.

I agree with this.

NU with that amount of debt means you won't be that bad off if you do end up in a small firm so while there is risk it isn't as large as if you were comparing Fordham at 100k debt versus NU at 180k debt. While Fordham for free would be sweet, if you really want biglaw I think you take NU in this situation.

if you go to fordham, please don't rent a room in NJ. that's like an hour or two lost each day - going to class / leaving class. used to live there.

Thanks for the concern, but I've done the NJ/Lincoln Center commute before and I'm comfortable (though unhappy) with it.

Nah, I hadn't been in yet. I am on academic leave just now. I expect we'll see one third or slightly above- range numbers as things start to pick up a bit, and given NY has had the strongest recovery. NU numbers someone else can better predict, but slightly below median still likely has some shot at biglaw as I understand it. My school is a fantastic deal for free (I wish!) However, you can evaluate what the tradeoffs are and what makes most sense for you.

considering the avg gpa at NU is 3.5-3.6 or something it s prob pretty hard to tell who is below median. They give out As like candy at NW.

I highly doubt that firms who have looked at tons of grades from NU kids over the years would not be able to tell roughly where students fell within the class.

God, let's hope. My goal is for my law and UG GPAs to add up to 6.0. This is not an easy goal.
