Pepperdine vs Davis
I recently got acceptances from Pepperdine, Davis, and Hastings. I'm not too sold on Hastings because I'm an 100 lb, 20 year old female and I don't think I'd feel safe in the area. Also I hear its very cut-throat and I am much more laid back. I'm having trouble deciding between Pepperdine and Davis and will not be able to visit the latter.
In favor of Pepperdine-its close to my family (I visit every 2 weeks as an undergrad at UCSB), has great weather, has a good entertainment law program, I have a scholarship there (although my parents are paying it all), laid back environment, conservative and Christian
In favor of Davis-higher rankings, good public interest program, equestrian center on campus, quaint town with nice restaurants BUT life could be pretty dull there it seems
So basically I am wondering whether I should go to a school with a higher quality of life or a better ranking. Advice greatly appreciated.
P.s. I will probably live in Southern California (maybe Orange County) after law school.

don't go to pepperdine. sf is not that bad...you'll be fine lol. hastings and davis place the same in CA, so it's really about what kind of environment you want to be in for the next 3 years...if you like cows, farms, and having nothing to do, go to davis. If you want to be in a big exciting city with tons of shit to do, go to hastings. Try to get $$ out of hastings by leveraging your davis acceptance since davis jumped up to #23 and hastings is still #42

I think Pepperdine has a rep as being pretty competitive too. Unless Pepperdine is giving you substantial scholly, I think Davis is the clear choice (at this point they are a much higher-ranked school, and I think it would also be a slightly more 'laid back' experience). Pepperdine also has some degree of religious affiliation (which could be a positive or negative depending on who you are I suppose, but prob should not influence law school choice tremendously in most cases imo).

I guess it's not just near Hastings that you've got to worry about guys in the bushes.

...I'm a Davis alum and I can testify to the fact that Davis is NOT just 'cows, farms, and nothing to do'. I can't even tell you how many times people have assumed this about the town and wondered 'how I survived.'Gotti wrote:don't go to pepperdine. sf is not that bad...you'll be fine lol. hastings and davis place the same in CA, so it's really about what kind of environment you want to be in for the next 3 years...if you like cows, farms, and having nothing to do, go to davis. In actuality, while Davis is in an ag area and a very small town, it's totally adorable and there's plenty to do. There's a Farmer's Market every Wednesday and Saturday, awesome bike trails in the area, and a couple of bars that aren't too expensive. It doesn't have as much variety as SF or Sac, of course, but Sac is a 15-20 min drive away and Sac is ~ 1.5 hours (3 hours if you take Amtrak).
It really depends on what you like. Davis is a great college town, very quiet and the people there are amazing. The school is really easy to get to, rent is cheap. Hastings is in SF, where there's a LOT of awesome stuff to do (I lived in SF right after graduating from Davis). Both cities have a great public transit system. Davis is VERY bike-friendly (SF is a little to hilly to bike in, though you can def do it if you want). I LOVE LOVE LOVE SF but keep in mind that Hastings is in a pretty shitty area of SF, and rent/COL will be much more expensive in SF.
As far as I can tell, both schools place about the same, so it's really an issue of your own preference. Having gone to Davis, I can say that I had an amazing time there and I adore the town. Others might not have the same opinion.
And FWIW, I only saw a cow a few times in my four years there, and every time I was deliberately trying to seek out a cow.
ETA: sorry for the long comment, and if you decide on King Hall, let me know and I'll give you some recommendations regarding awesome places to eat/go to in Davis

hahah okay well i like big cities and absolutely hated Davis when I was undergraduate school shopping. &my friends who go there are just always like "wow there's nothing to do" all the time. FWIW i chose the lesser of 2 evils (IMO) which was irvine...and i don't like OC either.
so i'm not just a davis hater. I'm a boring suburban town hater.

Hastings is in a sketch area, but not the sketchest by any means. It's ugly and there are homeless people everywhere, but there are cops everywhere too.

IMO, Davis is really a town where you have to create your own entertainment. If you're set on going clubbing/bar-hopping every weekend, it's not gonna work out for you. If you're okay with house parties and getting some fresh frozen apple juice and sitting in the park to nurse the hangover at the Farmer's Market the next morning...it's your type of town XD

Take a year off and retake/reapply. You seem like you could use some time to mature if you don't think you could handle walking through the Tenderloin.

Re: Pepperdine vs Davis
Just to clarify, I am NOT interested in Hastings anymore. Not just due to the safety but also because I don't think I would enjoy living in a city. And I don't think taking a year off is going to change that.bk187 wrote:Take a year off and retake/reapply. So just comments on Pepperdine v Davis not the ongoing Davis v Hastings. Thanks!

Davis just cause it is so much higher ranked, three years in a location you may not like is worth it if it brings you 30 years of better life down the road.
p.s what are the color of your eyes?

Re: Pepperdine vs Davis
Pepperdine is not worth it, Davis over it, unless Pepperdine is offering a free ride (and even then I'd consider Davis more highly over Pepperdine). If Hastings sounds cutthroat to you, then don't go there I guess. Hastings does have a great reputation among older lawyers, but Davis is a rising power and recently got a shiny new facility expansion.

i second taking a year off.
20 sounds too young.
go to davis if you decide to go to law school. that or hastings, but you apparently don't seem like a city person.

Age is nothing but a number, but if you're scared of competition at schools and unsafe areas..maybe you should wait a little bit. And if your parents are paying everything, go to Pepperdine..live by the beach and enjoy your 3 years of hell.

The majority seems to favor Davis. After visiting Pepperdine I decided that Davis was probably a better fit for me! Thank you for all the feedback.
