I know. Considering we've been having this conversation on and off since February. I fly out for Nashville around noon tomorrow and I'll have made my mind up for myself by Saturday.

Nashville wins these areas hands-down. Hot chicken is Nashville's specialty (and a personal favorite). It's not your traditional buffalo wing-- its a breast/leg/thigh quarter fried in a dry spice rub (cayenne, paprika, and something else) served with pickles, white bread, and a side of pumpkin spiced fries. It's a bit of a haul from downtown and it's in a shoddy neighborhood, but Prince's Hot Chicken is the Mecca of hot chicken. Featured on Food Network many times and designated "Tennessee's Best Restaurant" by the former governor, Prince's is not only the best hot chicken you'll ever eat, it's the best fried chicken you'll ever eat. If you spend some time in Nashville, you MUST visit this place. (Warning: make sure you have about 24 hours free on your schedule after you eat here......trust me. And just stay away from the hottest varieties).


The Loveless Cafe, also a bit of a hike from downtown/midtown but in a well-to-do part of town, is another world famous eatery that I've frequented since birth. This is simply the best breakfast you will ever eat. The biscuits are served with peach, apple, and apricot preserves and are unquestionably the best in the world. The death of the woman behind the biscuit recipe was front page news for two weeks. Another must-visit locale.


The Jack White connection requires no explanation. It's not uncommon to see him, Robert Plant, Ben Folds, or any other music legend walking around town or spontaneously sitting in with a band in a hole-in-a-wall bar on a Tuesday night.
Cowboy boots are plentiful, but outside of touristy areas, they are less common. Buy your next pair at Robert's Western World on Broadway.
As far as football goes, Vanderbilt is not a powerhouse, but the games are a lot of fun. Obviously Austin > Nashville for college football, but Nashville has NFL. Titans games are a blast. Check out some Preds games as well. Thursday is college night with discounted tickets and dollar beers.
I can't speak to 6th Street Austin vs. Nashville's Broadway/2nd avenue/midtown, but I'd be willing to bet that the difference in nightlife is minimal. Ultimately, you should go with the feel of the city. Nashville has a more SEC frat/touristy feel and Austin is hipster with elements of traditional Texas. I've lived in Nashville for 24 years and I've visited nearly every livable city in the US. I have no intentions of living anywhere else long-term. I honestly believe that Nashville is one of the best cities in the US (for law school or a career). I always LOL when I see how timid people are on these boards about going to Vandy because "it's in Tennessee". We're not talking about Selma, Alabama here. The Nashville MSA has 1.5 million residents and one of the largest populations of transplants. Just like any sizable city, Nashville has it's share of second-class citizens. The only difference is that instead of Bloods and Crips, we have rednecks. If anyone has questions about Nashville, fire away.

You say this like Nashville doesn't at least tie Austin in these areas.

Nashville has a lot going for it. It's a young city, a vibrant city, a growing city, and a clean city. The kicker is that it's a very Southern city; if you don't mind/like the South, you'll probably love Nashville. I happen to dislike the South (so naturally, I wasn't as big of a fan).

And btw, I had made up my mind to go to UT but this visit complicated my plan. Nashville is cheap and nice and the school is awesome.
