Maryland OOS with 17.5K scholarship versus Baltimore with a 35K scholarship. I am going to work in Baltimore with no dreams of DC or anywhere else. I have some interest in public service or federal government but don't know for sure. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Maryland. It gives you a better advantage throughout the rest of the state over baltimore.

Can I ask what your numbers were to get that scholly? The consensus this cycle seemed to be that Maryland was hopelessly tightfisted.

A bunch of my teachers have gone to Maryland and some Baltimore. In state, the schools are pretty much of a wash except for Maryland has some specialties that might be worth it if you're interested in them.

Judges in my county have JDs from Baltimore WL WM VA Penn MD GULC American and of course a Haavad. Maryland is such a small state with so many schools around it really doesn't matter where you went to school. The legal community in Bmore is small enough that after a few years you will be a known quantity and you're school won't matter except for alumni organization and in Maryland the Baltimore Alumni are all over. I'd take the money.

it really depends how harsh are the stipulations are to keep the scholly $$. While everyone wants to take the money, (as would I) I would reexamine the stipulations and find out if I could comfortably achieve higher grades than the min gpa requirement to keep the scholarship

To answer a couple of questions...

I got the scholarship at Maryland with a 162/3.91. It was a Leadership Scholarship that I received most probably because I was in the Army and am an adult student.

To keep the scholarship at Maryland I only have to remain in good academic standing (no GPA requirement). The scholarship at Baltimore requires that I retain a 3.25 GPA.

go with maryland. Check out the stips on the baltimore scholly. if you have to be above median to keep it- go with maryland.

While I do not currently go to law school in Maryland, I did my undergrad at UMD - College Park, so I have heard a good bit about these schools.

From what I know about about both schools, the legal market in the Mid-Atlantic region, and law school decisions in general, this should not even be a choice. Maryland all the way.

First the general point that the rankings difference alone justifies the extra 17K.

Second, two anecdotal bits because I am short on time:

I have two friends from undergrad. One later went to UB and the other to UMD. The one who went to UB spent 18 months bar-tending after law school and eventually landed a job as a state prosecutor. The other, who went to UMD, will be working at Cleary DC this summer (to be fair, he is top 3% in his class).

Oh shit, 3.25 at UB? A friend who went there said the 1L curve is set in the 2.6-2.8 range. Assuming this is true 3.25 is a the top of the class. Don't even think about accepting that offer without finding out what the first year curve is set to.

If this is the case, go to Maryland. A 3.25 stipulation is pretty bleh

1L curve at baltimore is 2.8 - 3.1 is what I was told at Law Preview Day last weekend.

The logical choice is MD
