Northwestern $$$$ v. NYU v. Berkeley

I've been offered $$$ at Northwestern. I've also been accepted at NYU and Berkeley.

It seems that NYU almost can't be beat for high profile public interest and I know they have a great LRAP. Berkeley is also a great school for public interest and can't be beat if I want to end up in California, but does it have the same cred on the East Coast?

holy shit! all things considered, including NYU's LRAP, i'm still gonna have to say northwestern. that is pretty outstanding

ETA: berkeley matches scholarships, so you could send the NU one over there and see what happens. you could also try that with NYU, though i'm not sure if they'd bite

I thought Boalt says they don't match NU scholarships.

You're right. They will match schollys from every T14 except NU.

Thanks for the correction.

Boalt shouldnt be in the discussion IMO. Its between NU and NYU. All things being equal that offer is too difficult to pass up so I would go to NU. Those are some great options, congrats.

Any idea as to why?

I dont want to hijack this thread with NYU vs Columbia. So if anyone who says take Northwestern over NYU would feel differently if the choice was Northwestern over Columbia then please PM me.

Thanks everyone for responding! I am extremely thankful to have such great options.

I don't know why Boalt doesn't match NU.... maybe it's a sign? not that I believe in those seeing as I'm a rational soon to be law student...

Is there anything public interest-wise that I could more easily attain with a degree from NYU than NU (not including location, I realize NYC=NYU, NU=CHI)?

Berk thinks GPA is god, NU routinely accepts sub-3.0 applicants. Berk is blatantly trolling NU admits.

Actually I have no idea, just assholes I guess.

As to why Boalt singles out NU as a school they don't match: probably because of the schools "below" Berkeley in the T14 (DCNG) only Northwestern is known for being pretty generous with cash. DCG don't seem to throw out as many big scholarships, and while I would say Michigan is close to being as generous they are recognized by Berkeley as a "peer" and therefore they match them. This is the info and vibe that I've picked up anyway.

Suppose the applicant had a 3.7+, is Berkleys policy not to match or that they dont automatically match?

If the OP doesn't mind answering, what did you do to earn this scholarship? Worked as an undergrad or any softs? Amazing numbers?

Don't mind at all. My numbers are good, but not "amazing" for NU. I had a leadership position with an "interesting" volunteer organization in undergrad. I've only worked 1 year post-undergrad (which is low for NU, where I believe 80+% have 2+ years of experience), but it is, again, "interesting" (meaning rare, I guess). It's an AmeriCorps/year of service position, so I make basically no money, but have more responsibility than someone who graduated in 2010 with a BA in English Lit and is currently making a normal salary. I work with ex-offenders, so I have some good stories to tell at parties and include in personal statements. Other than that... I don't know. Maybe my financial aid essay was really compelling? Maybe they made a mistake?

Do you have a similar offer? I saw above you asked about this situation with NU vs CLS.

I have the 1 year deferred 150k from Northwestern. I worked 25 hours a week as an undergrad.
Sticker so far from NYU, have not heard from Columbia yet.

First, congrats on your cycle.
Second, NU would be the unequivocal choice.

NYU has a bigger PI alumni network and attracts more PI recruiters. I don't think either of those are worth turning down the money at NU though.

We could talk at length about what the advantages of NYU are for you, but the fact of the matter is that they are not $150,000 better, regardless of LRAP. You can get into PI easily from either school, making it to the upper-echelons of that depends entirely on your performance in the classroom and at your job, not on the marginal difference between those two schools.

Matching is far from a sure bet, I've heard anecdotally that the matching scholarship success rate is south of 25%.

Well wish me luck.

They are really good with the need grants though, I must say.

ETA I vote NU if the other two truly give you no money, merit or need.
