Top Law Schools

I have an offer for a full tuition scholly to cumberland law school, but also have the option of going to UF law school. I am interested in estate planning or tax law. I want to practice in florida, and could likely end up back in the panhandle. I am trying to decide between the free ride to cumberland and sticker price at UF. Im leaning towards the free ride at cumberland even though UF is an elite tax law school.
any thoughts?

btw... the bar passage for cumberland is something like 70% for the past couple years. this is from my parents who are both attorneys in birmingham. also, cumberland's is only actually good if you want to do trial law in birmingham... don't do it.

Easy. UF. If you choose Cumberland, I would seriously question your judgment and your readiness for law school.

What's a Cumberland? Do you mean a cummerbund?

I don't see how a cummerbund will help you get employed after graduation, even if it is free. So I'd go to UF.

UF. Cumberland withdrew my application without my knowledge or consent. They offered me a fee waiver so I applied. And yes, I know, they did me a favor, but damn that's rude. They didn't even have the balls to reject me.

Gotcha, didn't realize I was talking about two different things.

Obviously UF is the much, much stronger school, particularly for your needs (practicing in FL).

What does sticker at UF come out to these days though, like $50K? I assume you're in-state right away?

For LLMs, yes. (It's also the main exception to the "LLMs are worthless" rule.)

Tax and IP are specialized and require specialized faculty, but all JD programs these days have adequate course offerings, esp. tier 1 law schools.

UF's tuition is at 18.5 this year and climbing. Major letdown.

I knew FSU's was around $16K/yr., so I wasn't sure what UF was charging these days.

$56K is well worth the UF diploma in this situation.

Yes, I am in state for UF. And, there is actually a very strong cumberland network here in the panhandle. I have talked to several local attorneys and they have all mentioned the fact that not a single person that has hired them has ever asked what school they went to. They all know plenty of cumberland grads that are doing very well here. The fact that I am a small town person and want to have a small practice makes the decision much harder. Is the 60k loan really worth it when I could go for free at a school that does fine in this area?

you could go to Cumberland do well, transfer with $$$ hopefully after your first year. This make economical sense unless being 100,000 in debt is nothing to you.

This is atrocious advice. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever go to law school on the assumption you will be able to transfer up.

does this imply to transfer and also get money from the school you are transferring to?
ps- you prolly should have applied to T3,T4 schools in FLA, a full scholly would make this thread much more interesting. Unless this school is only a few miles from the FLA border. (sorry my geographic sense of the South is horrible. )

Florida is the better option for several reasons including your interest in tax law.

I was genuinely surprised someone offered this advice.

where are we talking about exactly in the panhandle? rural areas? I say UF, but it seems like you have connections so you could probably swing Cumberland.

Cumberland is one of the worst law schools in America. UF for sure. There is not enough money that Samford could give you to make that worth your while.

Are these your only 2 feasible options? Have you considered retaking and going next cycle?
