San Diego's job market sucks, so if its getting a job that you're looking at, U of A - it's the better school and at least AZ isn't in double digit unemployment. So you didn't get into ASU though?

I actually did not apply.

Bummer, because it sounds like you would like to stay close to SD, and Phoenix is close. ASU is a better school if you want to end up in Phoenix. I still think that U of A is a really good option though. It's pretty much neck and neck with ASU, so landing in Phoenix shouldn't be too tough, and with some work experience you might be able to jump markets into SD if you really wanted too - it wouldn't be too hard to network from Phoenix.

No, Phoenix is definitely closer than Tuscon - 6hrs compared to 8/9ish. Your winters will be great, though, and it's actually a really nice city, in spite of the crazy people that shoot their Congresswomen. I would go with U of A. A couple of my friends went through USD, I'm local if you can't tell, and one saw the market crash during his internship, they couldn't hire him and he's now looking for work. The other can't even find an internship. You will have an easier time coming back, imo, if you get some solid work experience under your belt in AZ, and U of A's small class sizes and low cost of living don't sound bad either. Bureau of Labor Stats for employment info for ya: http://www.bls.gov/web/metro/laulrgma.htm - California's a sinking ship.

ps. U of A was actually higher on my list than ASU, I would've been really happy to go there. I've lived in Phoenix for a while, and while I loved the area, Tuscon just seems like a cleaner, less congested city.

Arizona schools do not place in California. Period. If you want to work in CA, the answer is easy...and vice versa.

How is it you didn't get any money from USD? They are among the most generous schools I have encountered. Did you apply to Loyola?

I just got my acceptance packet Saturday, no merit award in sight. It is possible they send it out at a later date, but I plan on calling [both USD and UofA] tomorrow. I got waitlisted at Loyola. sad face.

what are your numbers if you dont mind me asking? I got accepted to USD two years ago and my memory is a little hazy, but I do seem to remember their scholarship offer coming a couple weeks later.

Well my first reply is that San Diego is the greatest place on the planet. But of course, Arizona with a job is better than San Diego as a bum. This is a personal decision which I wish you luck with.

So it looks like your job opportunities come down to 61% at time of graduation with USD (Private Starting Median: 97,000; Public: 58,500)
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... -law-03019

And 73.9% with U of A (Private Starting Median: 115,000; Public: 54,000)

those median starting salaries are probably inflated by at least 20k.

Hey thanks ESQ

I had an insider tip from a current USD 1L that their rank was gonna plummet due to their horrible bar passage %

True. The employment stats are, no doubt, shamelessly manipulated too. It is what it is.

UofA is historically a solid T1 school and would seem to give you more options since employers take a while to change their minds and aren't as likely to be swayed by a bad USNews year or 2. If the costs are comparable, this one is a no-brainer to me. As much as I love San Diego, the job market there just isn't big enough to risk going to USD without some $$$.
