Where Should I Go?

Post by hopefulsplitter1 » Fri Mar 04, 2011 3:40 am

Ok, let me list my options and scholarships out and pros/cons for each.

IUB- 120k- Good School in the mid west. Concerned about lack of big law opportunity

Georgia/ Wake Forest- Both about the same tuition 14k/year, about same number in big law, would like to try out the south, but have no connections. Prob prefer Georgia between them.

St. John's- Full Ride- I'm from NY so COA would be close to zero, but its the lowest ranked school on my list and faces alot of competition in NY.

Illinois- 25 k/year. Attractive option but COA is higher than others on my list and i dont really want to deal with the freezing cold of illinois.

Emory-30k total- Probably too expensive, try to negotiatie

I'm not exactly sure what I want to do out of law school. I dont need big law money, but i would like a school/job that provides me with a secure financial future. I want to hear from you guys what do you think is the best option here. I'm from NY and I dont want to go to school in another area only to be shut out of jobs upon graduation b/c they think im a flight risk. Any advice is appreciated.

Pick an area where you want to practice and go to school there. Enjoy.

IUB sounds like your best option if you can stand the freezing midwest. $120k is a lot of money.

I think Illinois is probably the best of them if you could be happy Chicago. Personal preference probably rule here ... but it say you be getting the most out of the Illinois option. probably. 120 is close too. Pick which one you like better.

IUB or ST. John's

What would be the employment opportunities at each?

Indiana since a good start to a solid financial future is to begin with little or no debt.

You think Indiana would be better than St. John's financially? St. John's would be free to attend.

Does the SJU scholarship have the stipulation that you start losing it if you aren't in the top 40%?

Btw, which kind of splitter are you?

I would go with Georgia or Illinois barring an Illinois matching offer from Emory. If that happened, then either Illinois or Emory.

Yes, the SJU Scholly has that stipulation. I wouldn't go there if i cant get it removed.

I'm a high LSAT/ low GPA splitter 3.2/168

What type of letter should i send out looking for matching offers?

Do I tell every school about every other offer available or do I just tell them about offers from peer schools?

Yah, don't go to SJU with the stipulation. It's nasty. Plus, while you cannot project your LS grades based on UG experience, I'd at least be a little concerned about having a grades stipulation hanging over my head when I could only manage a 3.2 in college.

Pick the best combination of low cost and an area you would want to work in. It's personal preference so no one can make the call for you. FWIW, if it were me it would be Illinois. Big scholly and an outside shot at Chicago Biglaw.
