I voted a little, as that can greatly influence what market you want to practice in.

i'd say it'd be more of a detriment if you had friends at the same school because then when one of you does better it has the potential for causing drama.
maybe that's just me
**I guess "at" and "near" are very different

This.
Im considering going to school far away from where my best friend is going to grad school, and it is definitely a negative. All of my friends are on the East Coast, and that is part of the reason I still haven't pulled the trigger in deciding on which school to attend. I have East Coast options that I have left open because I know I have a support system (not just my friends) there.
But in the end as a student you have to go to the best school you can with the best scholarship you can get, and if that draws you away from your friends then so be it. You can always keep in touch and make new friends where you go to school, unless you are a total creeper, in which case you can "meet" people on the internet.

I went to college on the east coast so all of my friends live there, mostly in NYC. It really makes me want to go to school in NYC, however I got into better schools in other areas of the country. It's super tempting, but you'll make new friends at law school. It's so easy to stay in touch with people these days (facebook, obsessive texting, etc), that I don't think it should really affect your decision that much.. especially if you got into a better school elsewhere.

It's a consideration, but not a major one.
